Reply by Orienteeringmom on Sun Jul 1, 2012 at 1:08 pmZac, Nate and Dan are all in Kosice, Slovakia as of today. This is the first day of their training week. The Team will have trainings on different maps each day that are simiular to the maps of each of the events they will be running in competition. They will look at the mapping to see if there is any differences from the mapping that they are used to in the states. I just checked the JWOC webpage and there still in no information as to live results. The first race is the sprint next Sunday July 8 with the long on Monday the 9th of July. I will do my best to keep you informed. I believe that there is 7 hours defference in the time so that results should be available lunch/early afternoon here.

Reply by Orienteeringmom on Mon Jul 2, 2012 at 8:05 pmEveryone there is an AP thread that has pictures and updates. One of the girls is in the hospital until 1PM tomorrow. Her dad gave one of the chaperones the heads up about Meg not feeling well and to keep an eye on her. Last night it was determined that they needed to seek a doctor for Meg which they did. She is being treated for dehydration and a sore throat. The weather over there today was as hot as it was here in the 90's. So hydration is going to be a big issue if the weather continues this way. Hopefully by next week for the actual competition the temps will come down

Reply by Orienteeringmom on Tue Jul 3, 2012 at 7:12 pm3 DVOA Juniors and 1 adult are overseas this week and you can follow their activities at us-orienteering.blogspot.com. Alison Campbell is competing this week at WUOC in Spain and Nate O, Zac and Dan are in Kosice, Slovika training for the JWOC competition next week. Both teams are complaining about heat. The JWOC team was having sleep problems due to no A/C and went out an bought fans for their rooms. There are two days of posting from the JWOC team and one from the WUOC team. Good reading for all of us.

Reply by acampbell on Wed Jul 4, 2012 at 4:39 amGettting ready for the sprint today! but you can check out my blog for even more info about the training, opening and long relay. WITH MAPS! www.theacrace.blogspot.com
The long was hard but the heat didn´t actually effect me as much as i thought it was going to. they put in an extra drinks control though and that was nice. As for A/C I´ve been trying to turn mine off (but west point turns it on again) I´ve found it has gotten WAY too cold in the rooms and then you aren´t putting yourself in the heat to get used to it and then running outside becomes harder. All about climitising, just like jet lag.
Sprint starts at 4:30pm today. we are 6hrs ahead of the east coast. My start time is 4:35:30. Time to kick butt! -

Reply by wilburdeb on Wed Jul 4, 2012 at 3:05 pmHi Everyone,
We are having a great time in Kosice Slovakia. We are currently attending the training camp just prior to JWOC 2012.
Our flight over was from 9:00 am Friday (local) to 12:45 pm Saturday (local). Lots of little problems compounded by a 50 minute lay over in Amsterdam where we got to our departure gate 2-3 minutes after the plane was to take off. But the good folks at KLM held the plane just for us and we arrived in Prague right on time.
Erin Schirm is putting the Juniors through a rigorous training program including race prep/warmup, sprint techniques, Long race familiarization, Middle race techniques, etc. The food is not too bad. Full of starches ,soup and the protien is usually chicken, fish or cheese. The place we are staying is the Technická univerzita v Košiciach dormatory. Four people to a room (No A/C). Each room has a toilet and sink. There are four shared showers for about 60 people.
The weather has been dry and extremely hot (sound familiar?). As I mentioned earlier the rooms have no A/C. After three days of hot weather we found a store that sells fans. Each room now has at least two fans!
The city of Kosice is very nice. Lots of "Soviet" era block buildings with many more newer contempory style buildings being condtructed. The city has a great transportation system and good roads. The people seem quiet and somber. But all the Slovaks are very kind and eager to be helpful. This is a great city.
The maps are very good with at least 20 good locations within 60 km of the city. The most notable terrain is the Karst reion about 60km west and south. Here is a training map of the area. This area is full of sinkholes with most 20m deep with some as deep as 40m.
There is more information at the Junior Team Blog, where each of the Juniors comment on the days activities.
Tak dlho sa

Reply by wilburdeb on Fri Jul 6, 2012 at 3:08 pmHi All,
This is probably a day early but I am excited about the upcoming races. Zac and Nate will be starting the Sprint Final between 2:00 to 3:00 pm Košice time (or 8:00 to 9:00 am Eastern time) on Sunday July 8th.
The results will be at this link: JWOC 2012 Results
Today we did a short Middle course (3.5k & 80m climb) on the Baziny training map. Erin, the coach told everyone to take it slow and easy to get to know the terrain. All the boys finished in less than 24 minutes. I think they are getting excited. Nate is super confident after Jukola and Zac is getting zoned in, so this week will be fun to watch. After the training we took the afternoon off to go swimming at a lake near Bukovec. This was a welcome respite from the 95°F temperatures and high humidity. The weather is forecast to cool off during the next week.
Tomorrow night is the openning ceremony. The teams will parade through the arena together representing their country, similar to the Olympics I am told. The city of Košice is fervently supporting this event. Billboards promoting JWOC 2012 are all over the city. There are many people outside the Orienteering community helping to spruce up the city and helping at the event.
As always check out the US Junior Team Blog

Reply by wilburdeb on Sun Jul 8, 2012 at 11:09 pmHi All,
Yesterday was exhausting but the US competitors gave it their all.
Today is the long terrain - Karst region (Brazda). Another long day ahead. Nate O. gets on the bus at 6:30 am starts at 9:05, Zac gets on the bus at 8:30 and starts at 13:25. Talk about long start window. We all should be back to the dorm by 18:00. Thank god tomorrow is a rest day!
Guy: I wish I was a spectator for this race. Team officials, non competitor team memberrs (Meg) and runners that had finished were "locked in" the quarrantine area until the last runner finished. Spectators were allowed anywhere on the course (even the quarrantine area).
Other US Team member starts:
3 Ohrwaschel, Nathan 5 = 09:05:00
31 Childs' Andrew 61 = 10:01:00
81 Williams, John 161 = 11:41:00

Reply by wilburdeb on Tue Jul 10, 2012 at 1:06 amHi all,
Yesterday went from warm (first start 9:05) to hot (noon) to wet and cool (1:00 pm on). First off, Emily Kemp earned a Bronze medal for the Canadian women. She has been working hard to achieve this dream for several years.
The long start window meant that competition stretched over different climatic conditions. I don't think this really affected the outcome because the top three men ran through the rain and lightning. Zac had problems with controls 4,7 & 10. Then he finally settled down and did some real orienteering.

Reply by wilburdeb on Tue Jul 10, 2012 at 3:28 pmHi All,
Today was our rest day. The JWOC people provided transport to Domica cave near the Hungarian border. The cave is part of the Karst region with many wonderful examples of stalagmites and stalagtites. after the cave, we went to a small village (park and flea market) where we ate lunch. Then back to the dorms.
Tomorrow is the Middle distance qualifer race. The start times are as follows (times in () are EST):

Reply by Guy-O on Tue Jul 10, 2012 at 3:49 pmInteresting that the start list does not mention which variation/heat of the qualifier each junior is running. Do they even tell the coaches?
BTW, Megan is not Meg Parson's first name; it is Margaret. -

Guy:
We are not sure why the three courses are not uniquely identified. I think it is just another parameter
to prevent following. Up until this race I never realized the Middle race was set up with three competitors
starting at the same time on three different courses (same distance and expected winning times though).

Reply by wilburdeb on Wed Jul 11, 2012 at 1:44 pmHi All,
Today was the middle qualifier. The top 1/3 of each of three heats go to the "A" final (Championship), with the next 1/3 going to the "B' final (runner up) and the last 1/3 got the the "C" final (consolation). We had three U.S. team members get into the "B" bracket Ethan Childs, Andrew Childs and McKenzie Hugdins. Andrew had a two+ minute mistake or he would have made the "A" bracket. Nate and Zac had a decent runs for freshmen but ended up in the "C" bracket. All six Middle qualification maps are here.

Zac and I returned to U.S. soil Monday. This was Zac's first international event outside of North America. He did not place high in any of the events but he ran well and had a great experience. We want to thank our DVOA community for providing the orienteering activities necessary to help Zac learn and train. Zac has set a goal to earn a trip to JWOC 2013 to be held in the Czech Republic.
Thanks to all
