First of all THANK YOU to DVOA for all the support that we recieved!  We had a great time at the O in the Oaks competition.  Congratulaations to DVOA Club Varsity for 1st place!

Here is a summary of the final school Varsity results which were very confusing at the end of the event.

Nate O recieved 1st place for Varsity!  No confusion there!  JWOC next!

Coatesville recieved 3rd place team at the award ceremony, suprisingly, because Corey had mispunched (read below)....BUT...final printed results put us in 6th place out of 11 teams.

Now for the summary of scoring possibilities...........  After the first day we were in 2nd place. Even with all three team members making 5-10 minute mistakes!  With Chase included we would have been in 1st!  He would have been our 2nd place runner.

If you followed the previous discussion about "running up"  Chase was not on the final Varsity team. I tried.  He will be in the High School next year, but the rules say "same school" which is explained to us as "same building"  (I disagree).  But I played by the rules in the end.  I want to re-write the rules also!

The 2nd day we were looking real good...everyone had great times until Corey discovered he mispunched the 2nd to last control.  (On the way to finish two controls were pretty close, < 90 meters?, but different features, and a big "cow path" led to one and you could see finish from there....in the excitement to get a good time he did not check the number)  He was extremely upset at the end!  Chaulk one up for experience!

I don't know why they announced us as third place, but in the final results we are 6th!

    Here is the BIG IFs.....

IF Chase were counted as a team member.....we would be in 1st  First overall by a lot!

IF Corey had not mispunched.....(I  even added 4 minutes to find the right control)  We would have sqeaked out First 1st place!

The important part is they had Fun !!!  And they are looking forward to returning next year to win the Bruton Cup back! (Chase Corey and Nate plus any other recruits) It is being held by COC near Seattle WA - We have to start fundraising again!

For more good news about the DVOA juniors, check out the 2011 Final JWOC Rankings here:

    http://www.usof-rankings.org/rslt/2011_final_jwoc_rankings.pdf

Several are within striking distance of 75 points -- the minimum ranking score for JWOC consideration.

    Way to go!

I agree that same building just doesn't make any sense.  I guess schools using modular classrooms might as well just forget about fielding a team. But in the end is is about the experience they gained and the connections they made with other kids in the US Orienteering community.

At least we have the consolation of knowing that Orienteering is such a popular sport in schools, that these brilliant rules affect an infinitissimally (sic) small portion of the population.  You know what I mean:  There's thousands of kids in high schools fighting for these championships...

Like I said in the other thread:  Write better rules and they could become reality.

(and the criteria is not "same building":, it's same name)

I may have contributed to the idea that the interpretation was "same building"--which was my vague recollection of how it was explained to me over a year ago at Flying Pig.  The official rule simply says "same school", but I don't see how "building" and/or "name" clarify that much.  My old junior high was physically connected to the HS and we even took classes throughout the combined building, but in name it was "Emmaus Junior High" (only 7th and 8th grade as well).  Would that be a different school?  Although its a college example, is "Penn State" the same name if someone is main campus and someone else at the Great Valley campus?  I believe many larger high schools are following the university example and setting up multiple "schools", "academies" and/or "colleges" within the same building and student body to encourage more sense of community.  Is that the same name?  And in the case at hand, it seems possible to argue it either way--"Coatesville" is a name, or its not.

With so much variety, it seems nearly impossible to have a rule that unambiguously covers all real cases (as it is with most rules).  What strikes me as odd in this case is that the practical impact of how it is interpreted in the case of juniors "running up" just doesn't seem to warrant the concern the OUSA Board seemed to have in justifying such a strict interpretation.  How many teams are really going to unfairly benefit by "gaming" the system by bringing in elementary or junior high runners?  I can see the potential problem in the lateral case--combining different high schools into virtual "mega schools".  But not allowing running up to the high school one would eventually attend seems to be going after mice with a bazooka.

"Going after mice with a Bazooka"................I really had to laugh - that is a great one!  I did e-mail Clare Durand and will pursue changing and clarifying the rules.   I still have Hope going thru Middle school and should be involved in the Interscholastics for the next couple of years.

    Thanks for all the input.
