I'm looking for a book to help me learn some more techniques so I can improve on my navigational skills. Someone mentioned in my other newbee post about books available from the club. Wondering how I get ahold of such books?

Any suggestions on what book? I think I got the basics down so I'd rather focus on improving.

    Thanks, Mike

A couple of the best books for beginners are #46 in our library, Armchair Orienteering I, a practical guide to reading maps, and #81 Armchair Orienteering II, a practical guide to route planning.  Our library has multiple copies of these.  #61 Orienteering Skills and Strategies iby Ron Lowry and Ken Sidney is also excellent.

If you are a teacher, or a parent helping your child learn to orienteer, we have several books with lesson plans that would be helpful.  One of the best is the series by Carol McNeill and Tom Renfrew.  Start Orienteering with 6 - 8 Year Olds - A Scheme of Work for Primary Teachers is followed by books for ages 8 - 9, 9 - 10, and #136 Start Orienteering - Games for learning orienteering skills for ages 7 - 12.

The most popular items in the club library are in a couple of milk crates which used to be brought regularly to events.  There is a clipboard for sign in and sign out.  Kent and I used to bring the library, but no longer attend regularly so I turned it over to our overworked club secretary, Mary Frank.  We are looking for someone who would take on this project of seeing that books get to and from events and doing an occasional inventory.   Possibly we could arrange and publicize a limited number of appearances at events besides the winter meeting.  Anyone interested?

    Thanks Caroline for the info.

I'm still waiting for a reply from Mary about the O Suits, she sure is a busy person. I don't want to bother her with more stuff, so I'll talk to her when I see her at a meet.

I'm sure with all the stuff that's needed for a meet, hauling some milk crates full of books around seems like it would just be a pain in the butt. And I'm sure most of the people here are seasoned veterans and the Library probably doesn't get much use.

    No worries.

    Mike,

Mary is transferring O-suits to a new coordinator, Steve Mones. He should get leftover suits in a couple of weeks and be able to give us actual numbers what is available. Stay in touch.
