To SPRINT or not to SPRINT

All the regular courses have been set for Hay Creek on May 22. This is a venue that offers possibilities for very interesting courses with multiple route choices. The white and yellow courses will center around the reservoir which is very scenic and offers a lot of open area condusive to spectator viewing of multiple run-bys of sprint runners; the resevoir creating quick thinking on route choice as the course alternates back and forth from one side to another.
The catch to having sprints here is getting participants to agree it is worth the extra walking to get in and out of the area. The sprints could be held either before the regular courses or after. Here's the stats: The regular start is about 1.5km from the parking. I hear it already, but it's a liesurly stroll, albeit 2/3rds uphill 1/3rd downhill. As a previous topic pointed out there are some parks which offer no other alternative but a significant walk to good start points. The regular finish is about 1km from the parking. It is 1km from the sprint start/finish to the regular start with 70m climb. It is 1.35km from the regular finish to the sprint start/finish with 85km drop. Again, all this coming and going should be very relaxed, or whatever you want it to be.
There is virtually no extra work to set up the sprint course as it will utilize white and yellow controls already set up. The question is...........will you participate ? and if so, before or after the regular course ? I am leaning towards before from 9:00 to 10:00 allowing for as much rest as you want before going out on your regular course.
All the regular courses are of classic length, not short or medium.
The sprint will only happen if a significant number of people request it by responding here.
The reservoir IS really a beautiful area and it would be a shame for only the white and yellow participants to enjoy it as the rest of the courses are not set to go here as I am trying to keep them in more of the white woods.
This could potentially be a great "training" day.

Reply by Vadim on Tue Apr 12, 2011 at 10:02 amIt would be really nice if we can do sprint course in addition to regular white through red/blue courses. And running sprint as a first course is preferable. The other catch here is that you have to download your sprint course before you go on regular course, which means extra walk to/from registration/start areas.

Reply by Sandy on Tue Apr 12, 2011 at 3:31 pmRenting a second epunch is a good option.
Another solution would be to run a second computer - not a whole epunch setup, just the computer and a download/registration station - at the start/finish of the sprint so that competitors can download after the sprint then proceed to the start for their regular course. If sprint starts are from 9 to 9:30 and the finish closes at 10 (or something like that), this wouldn't be too bad. After the last finisher, the computer can be brought back to the parking lot to print splits and results.
I'm willing to help out with the epunch side of things if there are enough sprinters out there that want to do this. -
Reply by rgbortz on Tue Apr 12, 2011 at 8:39 pmAn additional computer at sprint finish is not a problem. It would be easy enough to get the computer to the parking lot before the first regular course finishers get there so people could see the final results for the sprint.
All the logistics of making the sprint happen are of minor concern to me. WILL THEY COME ? -
Reply by wilburdeb on Tue Apr 12, 2011 at 9:13 pmIf:
- An SI-Card 6 Finger Stick (holds 64-68 control records) is used
- None of the sprint control stations were used on the classic courses
Count Zac and I as two willing participants in the sprint (prefer early sprint).

P.S. Dan, it would not work because you cannot punch start/finish twice. So, either two separate e-punch sticks need to be used or have a second computer for sprints in the field. -

I need to justify the $ I spent on the extra memory space that I almost never seem to use.
