The Skunk in the willows

Looking at next Saturday's event, I see it is a Score O, I know this is a timed event to see how many controls you can visit. Having never done a Score O before I have a few questions, which probably doesn't surprise you.
How much time do you have? Did I miss this somewhere or is this a standard for all Score O's?
I'm guessing you can still start anytime between 10 and 1pm?
How does the timing work? However many controls you have by a certain time? Must you be back at the finish control by a certain time?
Looks like a very small park, I'm guessing I wont be looking for any Charcoal Terraces.
Thanks, Mike -
Reply by edscott on Sun Apr 10, 2011 at 10:39 pmScore O doesn't have a single set of standardized rules, but 60 and 90 minutes are the most common time limits. Each control has a point value, probably related to its difficulty and distance from start. There is a late penalty if you arrive at finish after the time limit. Again there is no standard for this so be sure you know before you start. Usually it is a set number of points/minute, or one control per minute, or some similar variation. Unless there is a note on the schedule it is a normal start window of 10 am until 1PM, but sometimes it is a mass start at a specified time. The mass start option is often used in bad weather to limit the time the workers are exposed to the elements, or in ultra long score events typically called Rogaines.

Reply by WindWalker on Fri Apr 15, 2011 at 9:08 pmWell it looks like it's going to be a wet, windy raw day tomorrow... I guess more sensible people would probably stay home and watch a good movie or read a good book, but me being somewhat less than sensible makes chasing controls seem like a fun thing to do in the rain. Sorta like when you were a little kid and used to go run through the rain for no reason at all.
Never grow up... see you tomorrow...

We were alotted one hour to find 24 controls, with points ranging from 10 - 40 points each, and a time penalty of 5 points for each minute late.
Vadim finished up while Lisa and I were signing up, he collected all 24 in less than 30 minutes, so I decided that finding all 24 in one hour would be a resonable accomplishment.
I turned the map over and developed a plan and off I was. I guess I should have reminded myself this was a 1:5000 map, cause everything came very quickly, and I over ran a few controls. Everything was going well and at a respectable pace, then came the creek - go around or through. Ahh what the heck, through I went, it was colder and deeper than I expected. The good part was that once my feet were wet the next two creek crossings didn't even cause hesitation. All controls found and back to start with a few minutes to spare. Lisa finished with less than all controls and 1 minute late. Not bad for her second ever event.
Vadim was still hanging around and was kind enough to go over his route choices with us which is always cool to compare notes.
And then the rains came!
Thanks for the great course and another fun event.
