Topic created by kathyu on Mon Aug 9, 2010 at 7:09 amThanks to Larry and Kathleen and Wyatt for some hot fun in the summertime. It was really interesting how you made the most out of staying on the trail. Also those who inadvertently left the course got the worst of it.

Reply by kathyu on Mon Aug 9, 2010 at 7:20 amJust looked at the scores, and I have two questions. Tom Forest (what a great name) -- did you run the sprint or the adventure race? and also how does climb get into the results? All scoring problems from Sunday are my responsibility, for sure, but I need to learn this stuff. I don't have the computer here today to look at Tom's scores and puzzle it out.

Reply by kent on Mon Aug 9, 2010 at 7:40 amThe course length, climb, and number of controls are usually in the results file that Sandy sends to me. The SCEE results file contained course lengths and number of controls, but the climb fields were blank. Not sure if Sandy enters the course data or if that is done by the E-Punch crew. Wyatt's course setter notes on the web contained the climb for the Adventure Runner course, so I was able to get that info. If anyone has climb for the White and Sprint courses, I'll get that entered also.

Reply by Sandy on Mon Aug 9, 2010 at 8:02 amThe climb needs to be provided by the course setter. Determining climb is not that hard - you just count every contour line you must cross going UPHILL on the course and multiply by 5 (assuming its a 5 meter contour map). You ignore downhills. For normal courses you general count the contours on the straight line. Since these courses were trail only, I suppose it would be better to count by following the trail route closest to the straight line.
Tom Forest did the sprint course but did not go to the first control (went right to #2). Since control #1 was revisited as #7 (i.e. the same control), the punch at #7 shows up as the first punch. This makes the splits look really wacko but I couldn't find a way to make it more representative of what really happened. -
Reply by KathleenG on Mon Aug 9, 2010 at 8:37 amI'd like to thank all the people who helped Larry & I as 1st time course directors, made it run smoothly, and kept us from losing our sanity: Wyatt, for course design and leading in setting out the controls (Wyatt, you should get co-director status; you answered so many of our questions and were so on top of map issues!); Sandy F. for printing the maps; Kathy U. and Vadim for working the computer (registration, downloads); the unknown expert (unknown by me - Kathy, do you know this helpful angel's name?) who knew how to sync the start/finish boxes with the master, so that we could get started; Zac and Dan Barker, Karl Alswede and Vadim, who all helped with control pick-up; Dave U. for bringing an extension cord so we could charge the battery, Roger Hartley who loaned us a cooler. Thanks also to the experts/mentors who were always available to answer the endless questions: Ed Scott (always had the answer/clarification we needed, or forwarded our question onto the right person to help us), Roger H., and Ron Bortz who also went the extra mile to get us the epunch equipment. Thank you everyone (my apologies to anyone on our long list that I forgot to mention) - and a big thank you to everyone who came out in the heat to run the courses! And whoever brought the orphan zucchini - yes it was adopted, but not by us

Reply by hughmac4 on Mon Aug 9, 2010 at 11:35 amThanks for a great event, close to my house Larry, Kathleen, and Wyatt! If you could just turn the humidity down by about 1/2 next time it would be perfect! :)

A big thank you to Kathleen, Larry, Wyatt and all volunteers for a very smooth well-run event. I thoroughly enjoyed the Adventure Run. Having run a very hot and hilly 9 miles the day before, I knew I should have just done the sprint, but Wyatt's novel courses (the July 4th sprint around the apartment buildings, the Valley Forge O Marathon) were favorites of mine, so I didn't want to miss the Adventure Run. Very pretty area, and the art installations were an interesting bonus. The course made great use of the park with lots of route choice. The out of bounds areas in the second half made route planning very tricky!

Reply by edscott on Mon Aug 9, 2010 at 6:30 pmGood use of the area considering the summer restrictions. Unless it has been modified recently, the rule for calculating climb is to use what the course setter believes to be the fastest route which in this case would probably be the shortest actual legal route. I'd use 100 meters for the short sprint.
