Seek NJ/PA Scout units or adult DVOA helpers in Oct

Topic created by BRycharski on Thu Jul 8, 2010 at 10:00 amHello DVOA summer vacationers, I am planning a potnetially Large Boy Scout Orienteering special event on Sat Oct 2. Are there Any PA units or local NJ DVOA members available ... to 'supplement' the Two troops or "O patrols" that I already have? I desire to line-up expert helpers and adult Trainers in advance ....
Date . Sat Oct 2
Site Campgaw Mtn, Mahwah, NJ Using NEW HVO 2010 revised topo map (map out of circulation since 2003 timeframe as old 1982 map was so out of date) - remap field checker is ME.
Courses: White and two Yellow course and possible Orange level Score event - this will NOT be open to the public although this will benfit HVO members as a new usable map will result from this effort.
Kit. Will be using equipment/O Flags supplied by HVO. This is a non-fee even (free), they are paying copy costs etc. volunteers will be allowed breaks onto the courses after there respective shifts.
Sessions: Sat Morning and Sat Afternoon sessions (Idea is to have two seperate meet crews, so that the work effort is not a burden to any one Scout unit or adults volunteer
Camping: Camping is available for Scout units wanting to over night tent camp.
Camporee: Possible 4-5-6oo Scouts attending, we will be one of 10 activity areas so we will not be overwhelmed by Scouts at any one session
If enought advanced runners/helpers requested a Green course I might try to add one in the afternnon session.
For More details contact Me. I have 2 newbie local units providing 4-6 Scouts each, desire to attract 2 or 3 more part time units. Merit Badge tie in possible. I was wondering if any PA or NJ Scout units help out DVOA and would consider helping me. Please contact me before August 15 for more details...

Reply by Orienteeringmom on Thu Jul 8, 2010 at 1:35 pmBob, I understand that you want to plan ahead, as I do but I have found that most people will not commit more than a month in advance. Life is to changeable for most people to do it much before then especially if they have children or young adults living at home. My suggest is if you don't get a good response now, repost right after Labor Day when everyone is out of vacation mode and back in a fall mode and know more of what is going on in their lives. Good Luck!

Bob, It's great that you're asking for volunteers, early and often. I hope you find the help you need. As a counterpoint to orienteeringmom's comment, the recent North American Orienteering Championships has received some of the most accolades of any national event in recent memory. The organizer of that event started searching for (and finding!) volunteers two years in advance! A description of his process, available on attackpoint should inspire us all. -
Reply by Orienteeringmom on Sun Jul 11, 2010 at 7:43 pmComparing the North American Champs and a local Scout meet is like comparing apples to oranges. There is no comparison. I would hope that the organizer of such a large international (more than one country championship) event would start looking for help as early as possible and people that are going to volunteer to help at that size event would be more than willing to commit 2 years in advance. Try getting volunteer help for a local club event two years in advance.
