Topic created by camperpat on Sun Dec 4, 2016 at 7:25 pmGreat Day of Orienteering at Rutgers! The sun was out, not windy and the courses were fun and interesting. The park was actually much better than I had remembered . Staging area was off the road, lots of people pitched in to help so we all had our chance at doing a course. Thanks Bob!

Reply by edscott on Mon Dec 5, 2016 at 10:58 amI'd never made it over to the Rutgers map before, but won't miss another one if I can help it. Very nice woods with detailed mapping that makes precise navigation possible. Unfortunately I didn't get to enjoy the last 2/3 of the course. Pulled a hamstring and am hobbling about today.

Pat's report captured the day. Everyone seemed to love the preserve terrain, the courses, and the sunny weather that made for perfect orienteering....even mild enough that multiple layers weren't needed, right Corinne? We had great help at the event:First and foremost, my NJ partners in crime who are the spirit and smile of our NJ events, Pat and Bob Burton, who host, organize, and deliver our NJ kit to events, then charm everyone they meet throughout the day at Registration and Start till next-shift volunteers free them to run their courses,John Gillette who graciously volunteered to arrive early, set up and run the e-system, even bringing his miraculously-easy-to-pop-up enclosed tent for us to use till close of day,Kathy and Dave Urban (who drove up during Saturday set-up to load all the courses onto the computer and make sure that everything was ready for Sunday), Kathy taking over the e-system once she aced her course then managing the system throughout final pack-up, and Dave serving in multiple ways, finishing with a pick-up stroll at end of day,Mark Frank who brought (and set up) staging equipment that would make an A-event proud (not to mention a local event to burst at its seams), served in a variety of roles, then packed up virtually all the equipment we had in the preserve, and rode off into the sunset....Ed Scott and Diane Reider who happily relieved the Burtons (even injured as Ed was, striding into some critter's hole hidden in the ground leaves during his course -- sorry Ed), Bob Rycharski who instructed his way through anyone needing it at Start (till the traffic slowed down to allow him to go out on his own course), Corinne, Petr, Bob Agosta and Dave Morgan, who along with Dave U made quick and flawless pick-up a snap. And a special thank you to Rick Lathrop of the Rutgers faculty, who also serves as the Director of Preserve Management, and who has annually welcomed us with open arms and full cooperation, and joins us all on running a course. Thank you for how easy it is to partner with you, Rick. After the flurry of pre-event preparation, the day was a total delight. Thank you to all who attended and gave us such kudos at end of day. As the Rutgers map nears completion, please come in the future to experience how this small park with a dramatic variety of terrain and hundreds of Sandy's rootstocks makes for wonderful orienteering. It is approaching my favorite park in which to design courses. -
Reply by bobburg on Mon Dec 5, 2016 at 11:03 pmI am increasingly loving this park. And for years I've loved designing a set of courses....especially with such variety of terrain and runnable areas at Rutgers Ecological Preserve that make for great orienteering. So I encourage you to go to Route Gadget to record your course routes. I finally got the course files to Hugh tonight, and they should be up soon. Would love to see the route choices everyone made, intended or not
