DVOA Event Schedule

A Message to our Membership and Orienteering Friends:

Our limited schedule continues due to the COVID-19 virus

The Board continues to meet virtually and adjust our procedures based on , Federal and State guidance and OUSA guidelines.

  1. We will continue in person orienteering events using the OUSA Social Distancing Guidelines outlined in their draft guidancePlease comply with our masking policy at the registration and download site to protect our volunteers and other participants.
  2. As we continue to add events to the schedule, we are taking a cautious and deliberate approach as state openings in the four states that we service ebb and flow with the current COVID situation. Our foremost consideration is for the safety of our members and guests.
  3. Pre-registration will be required for these events. Links to online registration will be posted in the schedule for each event. Fees will be payed online and waivers signed during registration to limit person to person contact.
  4. The Winter meeting will likely be virtual with newsletter distributed to members.
  5. Because of the impact of and the variations in the state restrictions and the understanding that returning to events is very much an individual decision, the Board has voted to suspend our points system for the 2020 competition year.  We will vote on resuming our points system in January 2021

Please check the schedule below for returning events, and bear with us as we rebuild a more complete schedule, and adjust to evolving guidelines. In the meantime, we encourage members to still get outdoors – it will be therapeutic. Train on your own, re-run old courses, do course planning field work. As a reminder, we have numerous permanent courses with maps available on the DVOA website: > Our Permanent Courses  Be sure to check that the park is open before heading out (a few are currently closed).

Stay tuned to the schedule page to see our opportunities as they develop.  We appreciate everyone's patience as events are adjusted and rescheduled to abide by local and state guidance.  Take care of yourselves and your loved ones and we hope to see everyone soon.

Stay healthy!

ED/CS Notes:

This year’s President’s Cup will be held on the new (once-used) Bellevue State Park map in Wilmington, DE.  It will follow a Score-O format with Jeopardy! Theme.  See details below.

Jeopardy O

Map Scale:                        1:5000

Contour Interval:             2.5m

Map Specification:            ISSprOM (Sprint Standards)

Event Format:                   Score-O

Start Time:                       12:00 noon sharp.  Gather at pavilion at 11:45 am for           map distribution & instructions

Time Limit:                       60 minutes

Number of Controls:         48

Control Difficulty:             Mix of Easy, Intermediate, Advanced

Control Points:                 Same as Control # (e.g. control 31 is worth 31 points)

Maximum Points:             2616 (excluding potential Jeopardy Daily Double Bonus)

Event Registration:   Click Here to Register <

Registration closes at 11:00 PM Thursday January 20th.

Electronic Punch:  E-punch will be used for Finish timing only.  Pin punches will be used at controls to record the responses to the Jeopardy questions on a special control card.

NOTE:  If you are concerned about touch points due to  COVID, you may bring your own permanent marker on the course and use that to mark the control card instead of the pin punch.

Overtime Point Penalties:

0 to 1 minute:                -50

1 minute to 2 minutes:    -100

2 minutes to 3 minutes:   -200

3 minutes to 4 minutes:   -400

4 minutes to 5 minutes:   -800

5 minutes to 6 minutes:   -1600

6 minutes to 7 minutes:   -3200

> 7 minutes                    -3200

Jeopardy Theme:  The map has been divided into 6 different sectors, each of which corresponds to a Jeopardy category.  The category topics and questions are orienteering-related.  The total points available in each category are the same:  436 points.  Within each category on the map are 8 controls.  At each control flag, you will find a laminated card on top of the flag showing the control number and the Jeopardy question along with 4 possible responses:  A, B, C, D.  You must pick the response you believe is correct and then use the pin punch (or your permanent marker) to mark your response in the corresponding A, B, C, or D box on the control card.  You will only receive points for a control if you answer the Jeopardy question correctly.  The difficulty of the questions generally increases with the control number (e.g. question at control 78 will be much more difficult than that at control 31).  You might want to keep this in mind when formulating your strategy for which controls to visit.  Also, two of the controls have been randomly designated as “Daily Doubles.”  These will be marked as such on the question card.  If you answer a Daily Double question correctly, you will receive double the point value for that control.  There are no electronic punch stations at the controls.  To record your Finish time, you must punch the electronic punch Finish box on the sawhorse on the east side of the pavilion.  Then proceed to Download at the pavilion.  At Download, you must download your finish time and turn in your control punch card so that your Jeopardy responses can be recorded in an Excel spreadsheet for the official scoring.  Note that overtime penalties are rather severe so you should plan on finishing within the 1 hour time limit.  Control pick-up will begin as soon as the course is cleared.

Several cautions:  There is a stable area on the southwest side of the map.  Controls have been placed to avoid stables and corrals but it is still possible you could encounter a horse and rider on a trail.  If you do, the horse and rider have the right of way.  Announce your presence well in advance and give the horse a wide berth when passing.  There is a popular disc golf course on the map and controls are placed in or near the disc golf area.  Please be respectful of other park users and do not interfere with their enjoyment of the park.  A road crossing(s) may be required depending on which controls you elect to visit.  Be mindful of traffic when crossing the road.  The Bellevue Mansion area and associated formal gardens are out-of-bounds and marked with red cross-hatch on the maps.  Participants are not permitted to enter this area.

Directions:  From north, take I-95 south to Marsh Rd. exit. Go south on Marsh Rd. to intersection with Carr Rd. Take a left on Carr Rd. Park entrance is ahead on right.

From south: participants are urged to use I-495 rather than I-95 due to major road construction in Wilmington. Take I-495 north to Exit 4 US-13/DE-3/Edgemoor Rd. Turn right onto Edgemoor Rd. and follow for 0.8 mile. At light, turn slight right onto Marsh Rd. Follow Marsh Rd. 1.3 miles to intersection with Carr Rd. Take a right on Carr Rd. - park entrance is ahead on right.

At this time of year, there is no park entrance fee in effect.  Follow signs to the main parking lot.  Porta-johns are available next to the parking lot.  To get to the pavilion from the parking lot, proceed northwest to cross the gravel track and then take the footbridge across the pond.  Pavilion #1 which will serve as the event center is on the left.  There are no porta johns at the pavilion.

ED/CS Notes:

Early March is the perfect time of year to explore all corners of this map.  So we will.

Unlike last June’s event (when full summer greenery strongly limited what terrain CS Sam could use), now courses can take full advantage of the most inviting areas in the entire park – even sufficient to shoehorn in the first (and perhaps last) Blue course in this smallish park. Cool

The posted course stats are only preliminary, subject to final vetting, but accurately reflect what we’ll offer on March 6.  So along with Tom’s wildly creative Jeopardy-O (in a couple of weeks), get ready to dust off winter rust and start the Spring season with a bang, leading up to our National Event two weeks after Core Creek.

As we get closer to the event, stay tuned for updates.
