Hibernia

Topic created by johncampbell on Sun Mar 16, 2014 at 5:59 pmScott and Steve: thank-you for your perseverance and doing a phenomenal job pulling this event off considering all the snow and ice impact in the park right up until the last few days. I enjoyed the green course and it was nice to get out, blow off the orienteering cobwebs and catch up with folks. Thanks again to both of you and your team

Reply by Nancy on Sun Mar 16, 2014 at 9:07 pmThe woods were a little slow going, with the extra downfall from the winter storms; trying to find a way through some of the areas was almost like trying to find a way through summer foliage, but at least with the downfall you could see farther than with leaf out!Yes, thanks, Scott and Steve, for a good event.I was talking with Scott after my run, and he raised a good question: does anyone know how this map came to have contour intervals measured in feet (10) rather than meters?
-
Reply by edscott on Sun Mar 16, 2014 at 10:08 pmRe the contour interval:If my memory is correct our basemap was from the Chester Co Parks Dept and we didn't attempt to redo the contours in meters. The original 1987 Hibernia map was a team effort. Eric Weyman rounded up about 10 volunteers to try mapping and gave us private tutoring. Mine was in the field where the finish was today, and the bordering woods. The base map was then divided into small areas and he knitted it all together when we were done. It has been updated a couple times, but we've never started with a new metric basemap.

Reply by camperpat on Mon Mar 17, 2014 at 5:37 amFreezing thumbs( because I forgot my golves) and traversing snow fields, what a great day of orienteering! Thanks!

Reply by Steve on Mon Mar 17, 2014 at 8:02 amAny time that we have a 3 meter contour, it is probably a 10 foot USGS base map.

Reply by EricW on Mon Mar 17, 2014 at 10:09 amIt was an engineering map, only medium quality at best, but clearly better than USGS, and free from the county.

Reply by anniemac on Mon Mar 17, 2014 at 11:02 amThanks to all who made this event happen. I thoroughly enjoyed myself walking the Brown (okay, maybe I ran a little!) I am recovering from a back injury and will likely be doing the Brown for a bit. So don't look at my name in the results and say, "she should be doing Green!" I'm just trying to ease into the season without re-injuring myself, and Hibernia was a great first event to dust off my O shoes. Thanks again.

Reply by hughmac4 on Mon Mar 17, 2014 at 12:03 pmThat was INDEED fun. Other than getting poked in the eyes a lot. Some incredibly tight races! I'll get you next time Erik!
There are some results technical issues to work out, so bear with our results guru Vadim and the SI team while they come up with the final set ... once I get that Routegadget will be posted as well, with a NEW, cleaner (less 'fuzziness') map! There should be some fun races to "Animate", and neat splits to browse as well.Good to see everyone yesterday. -
Reply by Vadim on Mon Mar 17, 2014 at 8:36 pmResults are processed and posted now with the best possible interpretation. Please let me know if you notice some missing entries or errors. RG will be up and running soon.
