Topic created by Karl on Sat Jan 25, 2014 at 8:48 pmDue to inclement weather and nasty driving conditions in our area I was unable to attend the Winter Meeting. Here are the awards and a few comments that justified the honorees.Although the Rileys with their multiple events directed at youngsters, Mary Frank's 9 event directing including 1 A meet, the high standard Ridley Foxtrot by Ann MacMullan and Dasha Babushok, Nancy Sharp kept her cool under very trying conditions at Fair Hill and Sandy Fillebrown's popular Shades of Death Rogaine all garnered very positive votes the winner is Fred Kruesi. Fred has been responsible for introducing multitudes of people to the sport of orienteering and to providing training experience for people to improve their skills and move up to the next level with his yearly commitment to the Hickory Run Training weekend. Congratulations Fred for the 2013 Experienced Event Director Award.Sandy Fillebrown's rogaine and A-meet courses were top notch (of course) as was Ed Scott's courses and Clem McGrath's relay. Zac Barker's night O was remarked to have been the best Night O ever run by club members but the winner of this year's Experienced Course Setter goes to Bob Burg. He put together interesting and challenging courses for 3 events this year, 2 at Washington Crossing and one at Brendan Byrne State Forest. He has strived to bring high quality courses to local events and he also was helpful in mapping the Trail O map for the Fall O Fest. Congratulations Bob.Novice course setters that have garnered positive reviews include: Roger Hartley was noted to have set up a wonderful event at Green Lane; Bob Fink set his first full slate of courses at Crow's Nest Preserve after having set up a Score O in 2012 but 2013's Novice Course Setter Award goes to Nicholas Reed for setting highly regarded courses at Rutgers. Congratulations to Nick please keep setting up those courses. The category of Novice Event Directors saw Bailey Reed doing a fantastic job at French Creek, the Pollicelli Family tackling a very difficult parking problem at Gould Run and Steve Mones for providing ice cream at the Rocky Road event at Brandywine Creek State Park. Excellent work all of them. The winner of the award for 2013 Novice Event Director goes to someone who was a novice and a veteran in the course of one year. John Gillette volunteered at numerous events but took on the task of event director at FOUR events this year. Congratulations to John for his immense amount of effort to the club.I want to thank all of the Course Setters and Event Directors for their efforts for 2013. Their work has made 2013 a Great Year in orienteering. Thanks

Reply by bobburg on Sun Jan 26, 2014 at 2:51 pmWell, color me blown away!!! Thank you so much.
As I was sitting home yesterday (so tired of fishtailing around in snow this winter), knowing it wouldn't be me, I was wondering who had won the Course Setting award this year. I thought Oct's WashCrsg was the only event that really approached the excellence I shoot for. So this really comes as a surprise.
So sorry I missed hanging with everyone -- I really look forward to it every January. Missed your company... and missed the annual potluck feast to boot!
Let me just add a quick plug for the Course Setting Training March 8th at Myrick. I so love piecing together the puzzle of a set of courses that are both challenging and fun for every level. We are so fortunate in DVOA to have such a wealth of good course setters, and I certainly want to encourage ANYONE remotely interested to attend the training. If you decide to try your hand at an event, you will receive whatever guiding hand you would welcome.
Thanks again, and hope the Snow-O went well today.
