Registration for the DVOA Hickory Hop Mini-Rogaine is now open!

Details about the Mini-Rogaine are now posted on the DVOA website.

Make a weekend of it: camp with other orienteers at Camp Shehaqua, race in the DVOA Vice-President's Cup Relay and dust off your flashlights for the Night-O on Saturday before the Rogaine!

Note that if you want to stay at Camp Shehaqua for Memorial Day weekend that you must register to reserve a spot.  The fee is $12 per person for the weekend (flat fee regardless of the number of nights you stay).

I have a question about Hickory Hop events for Novice orienteers.  I wanted to bring my son to this event and he has only done some white courses a few years back.  What suggestions do you have for the Relay on Saturday and the Rogaine on Sunday?  I see that the night O has beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

A second question is on the Relay on Saturday.  How are the teams formed?  Is this done at the start or do we need to organize teams before the event?  If they are formed before the event will there be a facebook page or alternative to assist in forming teams?  I guess the same goes for teams for the Rogaine - it seems that we need to know the team members before we sign-up for the event?

The rogaine is not really designed for beginners who have only been on a white or yellow course.  It is possible that they could find a control or two (or more if they were really persistent) but I expect they would find it rather frustrating.  It would be suitable for those who have done Orange courses as long as they were realistic about which controls they could find successfully.  There are many not too far off trails or on obvious features, but there are aslo many that require advanced navigation.

As far as teams go, it is expected that teams for the rogaine are arranged ahead of time, although last minute switching around is inevitable (people get sick or injured or something).  For the rogaine, the best solution might be for you to team up with your son.

The relay is a bit different and typically teams are arranged at the event especially since team makeup might depend on the details of how the relay is being organized.  There have been years when the teams have been handicapped so that you needed a certain number of points and different ages were worth different points or something like that.  I'm looking forward to seeing what our VP has in store for this year!
