Topic created by johncampbell on Thu Apr 11, 2013 at 8:41 pmHeather is planning to walk here as part of her Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition with some friends and is looking for advice about camping in this area. For all those of you who have hiked this area, some advice on free(wilderness camping) camping locations/ restrictions would be really appreciated.

Reply by chand on Thu Apr 11, 2013 at 8:47 pmAs I recall on the Jersey side the hike is a good one. There is a camping spot before Sunfish pond which is supposed to be for people hiking more than two days. That being said, I've been on scout outings where we've hiked up, camped there and then hiked down the next day without a problem. I think there is a common group fire pit there. If you hike past Sunfish pond a bit, you get out of the state park and into the area where you can camp along the trail. No fires (other than cooking grills) are allowed.

If you time it right, the descent on the PA side heading north(east) is fantastic with the Rhododendrons in bloom. (I think that is late May or early June) There is a section that is like a Rhododendron tunnel. There are several camping spots on the PA side and an area a bit hard to locate just before the descent that has fantastic views of the DWG. As mentioned earlier, there is one designated area in NJ prior to sunfish pond but there is no camping in Worthington State Park. Once you get beyond WSP there is a saddle that is used by campers and then sporadic spots along the trail. Further up (near BSA camp Nobebosco there are some nice camping locations with great views (I may have one or two of those marked with GPS). There is also a shelter in PA just east of RT 191.

Reply by camperpat on Fri Apr 12, 2013 at 7:18 pmI have walked the delaware gap section several times. The Pa side will be beautiful with blooming laurel. The New Jersey side goes to sunfish pond. The trail is very rocky everywhere in pa. You can do a loop of 12 miles starting at the trail sign on the new jersey side, go up the red trail, it has great overlooks, take the trail at the top which is an old jeep road, take it for several miles, go left on the tourquoise trail, it comes out on the back of sunfish pond , make a left and hit the AT blazed in white to the backpackers site, and stay overnight on go back to your cars, 4 miles from the campsite on the At. There are great trail maps at REI or at the visitor center at the water gap. pat burton I could give you lots more information. camperpat@hotmail.com
