I love Hickory Run and look forward to this event every year. Thanks everyone for another great one!

PS - We hope you liked some of the technology we were testing out for NAOC 2012! -
Reply by anniemac on Mon Sep 17, 2012 at 11:00 amThis was my first time at Hickory Run, and I had a great time. The training was very helpful for me, and I learned a lot with my group instructor Ed Scott. The Sunday Orange course was very difficult and I made a lot of mistakes but it was very eye-opening for areas to improve. I'm so impressed by the level of organization it took to put this on, and how successful it turned out to be. Thank you everyone who worked so hard! I took a FEW PHOTOS.

Same here. I have been involved with many boy scout events and know the effort and complexities of putting on a weekend event. Hickory Run was a well-orchestrated event. A special thanks to the kitchen staff as they did a good job with the menu and getting it served. We’re looking forward to next year.

Reply by jriegner on Tue Sep 18, 2012 at 12:38 pmWhat a first-class event! My son and I had a blast. It's not easy pulling off an event with as many moving parts as this one, and the organizers nailed it. Well done!

Reply by anniemac on Tue Sep 18, 2012 at 3:14 pmForgot to mention: how fun was it to have LIVE RESULTS? and the live Forest Cam? And the PA system announcing as you ran in? We are already so spoiled with practically instant results and fun splits and ranking data to play with, this is just the icing on the cake, and delicious icing it is. Well done Techie Gurus!

Another great DVOA run event.....
Beautiful weather, fun blue course with a few tough placements behind the lake amoung others......friendly folks, nice camping area, and passing through the evergreen sections was a bonus.
Sorry I didn't realize how nice the place was ...would've loved to camp out and get some training.....might keep me out of the Rotos and getting bruised shins in the future.
I was wondering what all those electronic gizmos attached to the closest flag posts were for and the big monitors.....I figured training videos since monitirs were off when I started.
We will actually be able to see folks running through remote sections of the course at the nationals????
Must be cool seeing real time progress and the race unfold as top competitors hit various control placements along the way.

Reply by rpboehme on Wed Sep 19, 2012 at 6:52 pmThanks to all for being so welcoming to a relative newbie and to Sally the E-punch registar for answering some volunteer questions for me. Basically, I was wondering whether one can volunteer at an event and still participate. Thanks for a positive affirmation.
Walking my last yellow was fun on Sunday, especially with the scouts zipping around all over the place. I am an O merit badge counselor up here in the Lehigh Valley and truly enjoyed watching these enthusiastic young people find their way around Daddy Allen.
Thanks again,

Yes, it is very possible to volunteer and still go out in the woods. In fact, it is very rare that we don't do that, other than the course setter and the Event Director.
I am sure that you noticed a big difference between BSA and DVOA style orienteering. When doing your merit badge work, feel free to contact me for some maps in the Bethlehem area. We have two maps here, Illick's Mill, and Star Village (with a section of Star Village enlarged that we call Saucon Creek). It may help.
PS, I would bet that the person at the computer was Sandy, not Sally. Her picture is beside the second post in this thread -

Thanks for the correction and my apologies for misnaming Sandy Sally. %-| Brain cramp.
I agree that there is a definate difference between DVOA and BSA orienteering - we are mostly working at the intro level with the boys and try to not make things frustrating. My sons and I had run the Illicks course and Star village in the past and we even took some boys from our troop to Illicks. Over the past several months, one of my sons has competed in a couple DVOA events with me observing and being availabel to answert questions. When he finishes, I usually only have time to run yellow afterwards and then we head home. He still needs to help officiate an event to complete his badge, so we are hosting a little event for our troop and another couple troops on Oct. 27 (I do realize it is the same date as the big event at Wash Crossing, but it was when we coudl get the school). I taught myself OCAD 8 and generated a little map which we will use.
I appreciate your offer regarding the local maps and wonder if (at some point) we can get the DVOA partnering with the Minsi Trails council (runs Boys Scouting from down in Hellertown up through the Poconos and over into the Anthracite region). Our local leaders have lobbied me to expand our little troop event to the district and council level, but the school ground woudl be insufficient. Within our council, we have several beautiful camps with wonderful varied terrain (such as Trexler Scout Reservation in Jonas, PA and Camp Minsi up near Mt. Pocono). It may be interesting to see if these can be mapped and used for (distant) future events in the same way that Delmont and Hawk Mountain are.
Full of ideas but lacking in time,
Rich

Reply by Steve on Thu Sep 20, 2012 at 9:34 pmTo be honest with you, I have given up on the council. They usually want to make their schedule in August for the whole year, and when we call they all have an excuse why they can't come.
Talk to Eric Weyman about mapping projects. He is always interested when someone can do the contact work and find a place to put up the mappers when they are in town -
Reply by Len on Fri Sep 21, 2012 at 12:39 pmI'm also involved with the Minsi Trails Council (Forks District). We may not be able to get on their council schedule right now but the next time DVOA has an event in the Lehigh Valley, I will be promoting to some of the Scouting professionals who would at least let everyone know about it.
I know the person in charge of activities for Forks and orienteering would work great for a District camporee. But that usually requires a year for planning. I also know other leaders who would like to see orienteering maps for our camps. This mapping may have been started already on the hobby level.
So I'm looking forward to the next time I see a confirmation of an event at Illick's Mill or Star Village / Saucon Creek. -

Reply by edscott on Fri Sep 21, 2012 at 9:55 pmRe the scouting comments above...There is a mapping effort now underway at Minsi. I was up for a day this summer and did a little work to get a scouter started on making their existing map suitable for a simple permanent course. Although most of the areas I saw would be mapped in green the area does have some potential. I also did a simple map for Trexler a couple years ago for a leader training program. The terrain there is much more interesting from an Orienteering perspective and would possibly support an A event.

Reply by rpboehme on Mon Sep 24, 2012 at 6:22 pmThanks all. Minsi is very nice, surrounding Stillwater lake. It has some nice flat hiking, for those into hiking (which is the environment I come from prior to my recent participation in Orienteering). :-)
Trexler Scout Reservation is some really nice, more interesting terrain with what I would consider mostly white woods.
I can certainly help out with mapping if the need arises and my calendar permits. Of course, I am thinking this is long term projects.
Rich
