Springton Reminder and Notes

Topic created by FredR on Fri Jul 13, 2012 at 10:48 amIf you are thinking of attending, please pre-register as soon as possible, as the maps will have to printed in the next day or two (i.e, before the 16th deadline). And don't forget the $1 pre-registration discount!
The courses are now up in the announcement. As you can see, they are on the shorter side to accomodate both potentially hot July weather as well as allow for combining them, as mentor or mentee, with short training courses that will also be available. The vegetation is generally reliably mapped, and therefore can be avoided and/or used in navigation. Much of the rough open areas were cut recently and are passible, but the areas mapped as undergrowth (green slashes) are best avoided. A number of areas are planted in corn and are marked as out of bounds. Trails, unlike in some of other less-managed parks, are also generally reliably mapped, though the most indistinct ones may be overrun with summer growth.
The longer courses provide for some playing around in Indian Run, but it is so low right now that you can easily keep your feet dry.
If you are new to DVOA or just looking to take your orienteering up a notch, this experiment in summer training is just for you. And for the rest of you, I hope you'll take the opportunity to share your time and knowledge to strengthen our club by helping out. Regardless, I think you'll find the competitive courses a challenging mix of navigation and route choice on an easy-to-read 1:5000 map.
Hope to see you there.
Fred
