Orienteering Control Found in Woods

Topic created by ErikEddy on Sat Jun 9, 2012 at 10:36 amMy dad found an orienteering control on Neversink Mountain. Any idea how it got there....? Perhaps stolen from a Pagoda/Egelman's Park event. Should we remove it...?For those familiar with Neversink Mountain:From the Forest Hills Cemetery climbing up the main trail towards "the stop sign" just passed the lookout/campsite and the bend in the river and it was found by a cliff off to the right, in perfect condition.

Reply by edscott on Sat Jun 9, 2012 at 11:10 amI suspect there is some kind of adventure race being planned in the area. I found 2 on Mt Penn Wendnesday while hanging streamers for our June 17th event. They were very new bags, hung high, and on very basic features with codes that did not match our system. They had small reflective tags on them so they could be for some kind of 24 hour event. The codes of the ones I saw were something close to P 7 and P 3.

Reply by DSevon on Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 5:49 amGOALS Adventure Racing Association (bgibbons at goalsara.org) ran their 24 hr Cradle of Liberty adventure race last weekend. Mt Penn at night was definitely part of the course, and I believe Neversink was too. Other parks on the route included Hopewell Furnace, Birdsboro, and Evansburg. I know all the controls at Hopewell were picked up as Ron Barron (DVOA member) did that pick up.

Reply by seland on Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 3:08 pmMy son and I were picking up the controls in Birdsboro Saturday when we came across the dog walkers at the reservoir. I was pleasantly surprised when someone saw our map and asked if we were orienteering.
Anyway, to answer the original question, yes, the controls from Neversink were part of the race. The racers rode from Hopewell to Birdsboro then to Neversink and then to Mt. Penn before riding back to Evansburg. We'd hoped to get the Neversink controls on Saturday, but Birdsboro took longer than expected so Neversink didn't get finished. Thanks for leaving the control where it was in Neversink. It'll get picked up soon--there were a lot of controls in this race.

Reply by Steve on Mon Jun 11, 2012 at 6:33 pmI would highly suggest that you label your flags with your club's contact address (I beleive that all of ours are). Our sport is unique enough that we think we are the only ones out there
. Last year while field checking Star Village we found about ten flags. Since they were there for over two months I was sure that they were forgotten by whoever hung them. It was only Sharon and Petr that convinced me not to declare 'finders-keepers'. Had they been labeled I could have contacted the owner and determined their status.
