Rutgers Perserve

Topic created by markwalsh on Thu Sep 29, 2011 at 5:22 pmThanks to all who made The Rutgers Perserve possible last weekend ....It was nice to have a DVOA event that was relitively close for this HVO/DVOA'er.
Lots of trouble hidden under the ground cover and not as easy as I expected from a flat course that was pretty wide open.
Worked up quite a sweat and got a good work out in.

Reply by BRycharski on Fri Sep 30, 2011 at 10:26 amThanks for your kind remarks "Mark", I too am very greatful to all the Rutgers event/DVOA Volunteers, those that helped at the roadside registration table, the E Punch operators, the trainers and at the Starting line, and also to the nice courses laid out by Sergei Zhyk, and also Nadia and Kseniya P and Vadim whom set out the E punch units and O flags in the 8:30/9:15 am timeframe. I was expecting heavy rain at this event, but luckily, the NJ weatherman got it wrong and we had a mostly sunny warm day for an Rutgers Orienteering run. We did have a nice local event, with Many Boy Scout units (Florham Park, Somerset, Highland Park, and Pluckmem Scout BSA units, etc. ...) coming to learn about orienteering and map reading and even measuring the tall light posts (without rulers or tools) for Scout requirements. SYITF.
My best advice to other DVOA Meet directors, is to disregard a Scout unit that wants to run an orange course without a 5 minute training session. I quickly asked if the teams could read the standard non-English orienteering shorthand sysmbols, and they could not (could not identify what a re-entrant symbol was). I gave them (Scouts) more tips and training before they started, I feel its better to refresh there knowledge than have them going out somewhat blind into the woods. Again, thanks for all those who helped at this Small local O event at Rutgers Eco-Preserve, that seemed well received - attendance wize this year.
Addditional thanks goes to Rutgers O Meet helpers Vadim Masalkov, Doug White, Kathy Urban, Eugene Frelenko, Zak and Dan Barker, Guy Olsen, Rick Whiffen and Mary Frank (Insurance papers) & Bob Burg, (Map production/orders), and anyone else I missed that helped out. -
