Rutgers Preserve next DVOA event Good Times Coming

Topic created by BRycharski on Mon Sep 19, 2011 at 10:02 pmOK, Sergi Z (CS) has the courses ready, Bob Burg has the Pre-printed maps done/ordered and delivered with Jerry Smiths help I think, and all the e punch gear is set, so hopefully another great O run Day in the woods is just 6 or so days away (25th).
As Always, see directions from the DVOA schedule. Hey, Has ... anyone ever Hiked to a previous Rutgers Preserve O event - from the nearby "Edison Train station" (about 1.5 miles give or take), I have Googled the directions but was wondering the feasibility of that trek, and if sidewalks exist 100% of the way via Plainfield/Stelton Road and West Ethel Road. Seems about 1.5 miles, shorter if you cut thru the Rutgers Solar Array/Power gen. Panel farm, but please do not complain about static shock or electric mutant "Ticks" attacking you last year! I also know that Avenue E does not has sidewalks, but has a grassly right of way/mowed lawn.
I still Please need morning shift help at registration and Some newbie to "O" Scout, club instructional Trainers, but a smaller crowd, nothing major in Youth group numbers (see volunteer list). We do have the e punch set out chores well in hand at this point.
And the Rutgers forest ... only lost (Hurricane Irene) 2 maybe 3 major trees, trailside (New unmapped rootstocks on ALL three), and I do ask that Red and Green runners talk to me or Vadim or bob Burg if more new rootstocks (unmapped) of the larger kind are found (for next year). I have noted the mighty Oaks (2 K tons or more) blocking trails already, and plan to have a master Irene firewood :-) location map at registration ... showing where they 90% say, block a local trail, but over OJ course runners should not care ... about that anyway (who needs more excuses for bush wacking in DVOA land). Oddly enough, the three Rootstocks I have found are all in the central trail core near Ross Hall roads... Where the ... "one" fallen tree effects the white course route, hikers will find an obvious short side trail ready for a short streamered detour back to the offending lazy logs', other side...) Hopefully, Rutgers environmental Preserve trail maintainers will clear these 3 in the late fall (with chainsaws). Hope to see you hiking or running in NJ on Sunday in central NJ & Rutgers Preserve park. SYITF

Reply by markwalsh on Tue Sep 20, 2011 at 12:56 pmBR......I've already volunteered for pick up duty and am not much of a morning person.
What time would morning registration begin?
When would I be free to start running some courses?

Reply by Vadim on Tue Sep 20, 2011 at 8:37 pmMark,
Our usual registration/start time window applies: 10:00AM through 1:00PM.
Controls pickup will start at 3:30PM promptly, no exceptions. If someone likes to spend longer time in the woods, please plan accordingly and arrive early enough. -
Reply by markwalsh on Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 12:52 pmVadim, are the gentlemen I ran with a bit at Stuckey while you were picking up controls?
Yes I plan to get a real early start hence my hesitency to volunteer for early registration duty.
I think since I'll be doing some pick up...... I'll go brown and green or see how it goes......I need lots of work on those longer legs and staying in contact with the map.

Yes, I'm the pickup person you run into last weekend. Rutgers is less complicated terrain and almost flat, so, you should not have too much troubles. -
Reply by Vadim on Wed Sep 21, 2011 at 7:26 pmIf you are planning to attend this weekend's event at Rutgers, we could use your help!
Thank you in advance.

Reply by BRycharski on Fri Sep 23, 2011 at 4:20 pmHello DVOA members, Everything is still a "GO" for this Sunday's Rutgers Preserve O Meet. As the area fields and streams drain well IMO, I do not expect any problems from todays moderate rainfall.
As I just had a request for - directions by "Bike" by a local Rutgers resident, to the registration area, I repeat them here for any other bikers.
For Bike Riders - registration location heads up - The DVOA orienteering for Rutgers Ecopreserve and it's registration is across the street (a bit southwest) from the Avenue "E" Parking Lot #101, in a temporary tent. Look for the - "Red" DVOA banner ...next to a "small registration tent", on a narrow grassy lawn - near the Brook that goes into the RU Eco- Preserve/woods.
The tent with .... a white table will not be set up until Sunday morning, so there is nothing there right now. PLease dismount the Bike at the ... road side [near the tent] as there is a small drainage Ditch that is quite deep but is crossable on foot.
I.E. There will also be Yellow road side "DVOA - Runners Crossing" warning signs placed roadside to alert cars to slow down for pedestrians crossing to and from Rutgers Lot 101 on Avenue E at the Livinston campus.... Hope to see you all Hi and Dry while Orienteering on Sunday. -
