Supplemental orienteering on Memorial Day weekend
-
Topic created by j-man on Tue May 10, 2011 at 9:26 amThe meet at Slocum looks like a great one, but if you are looking for more orienteering options the day before or after, HVO is hosting the US Team Trials and a full slate of local event courses Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Slocum and Blue Mountain would be a nice combination weekend.

First a very interesting campus Sprint terrain, recently mapped by DVOA's own Bob Burg.
Then two events on Blue Mountain which is a very special terrain.
In terms of topographical and rock detail, think West Point squared or on steroids. This old historic map has undergone a remapping, and the vegetation has reportedly become quite nice.
Not a place to move up, but if you go expecting a challenge it should be very enjoyable. -

IMO, the Saturday sprint is a can't-miss: A brand new venue featuring campus/urban terrain -- a first for HVO! However, due to a very short start window, open start times (ie, for walk-ups) might be very limited, and pre-registration is strongly advised -- not to mention $4/race cheaper ($2/race for juniors).
Eric: As Course Consultant -- which I consider a draw in itself -- would you classify the following as a true statement?...
Despite being just spectator races, the White, Yellow, Orange, Brown & Green courses will be of A-event quality, and are designed to the same distance (Sprint, Long, Middle) as the corresponding Team Trials (Red & Blue, A-event/rankable) courses.

Close, but I'm not sure it is that simple.
First, I am only the course consultant, and don't have final authority.
Second, the course design process is still going on.
Yes, the goal is A meet standard, in the same terrain, using the same map, and in some cases the same controls as the Team Trials courses.
The main objective of White, Yellow, Orange is to meet the normal standard for those courses, and these courses won't necessarily have the same special style, or adjusted distances as the TT Sprint, Middle, and Long.
The Brown and Green courses will probably have similar style, and close-to- proportional distances to the TT Sprint, Middle, and Long courses (Red and Blue).

Reply by EricW on Wed May 11, 2011 at 8:21 pmWhile doing some course work it dawned on me that I answered incorrectly above. The Sprint Orange, and probably Yellow and White will be shorter than normal, but I think quite entertaining.
I've got too many courses in my head, so its probably best not to hold me to hold me to every point above other than we are working diligently to make every course appropriate, and worth the trip. -

Creating the Sprint map of Purchase campus has been amazingly intricate. I have mapped the detail of high school campuses, and sections of Princeton and Villanova, but never an area of this size and incredible architectural detail, all to the specifications of international Sprint standards.
Purchase offers a 3-dimensional puzzle that I'm sure course setter Neil Dobbs is making full use of. Can't wait to see everyone's responses to the courses Memorial Day Saturday. And after the team trial sprints are complete, we'll also be offering a special map event that guides you in exploring Purchase SUNY's special features, from historical to botanical to cultural.
And from what Neil has told me about Blue Mountain, he finds it to be some of the most interesting and challenging terrain in O-captivity
, with lighter green than originally mapped. Should be fun!!!

Reply by markwalsh on Tue May 17, 2011 at 4:35 pmWe had adventure race up at Blue Mtn last year ....was tough course.
Lots of switchbacks on the single track we used for mtb biking section and rocks were abundent.
Not sure what part of park will be used for TT's but it should be fun.
I've been looking at that O-map lately prepping for the spectators courses on Sunday and Monday.
Looks like could possibly be a good mix of trail use and through the woods kind of course.
Should be fun way to spend a few hours on a holiday weekend.
