Reply by FredR on Mon Apr 18, 2011 at 10:22 pmJust got an email from Richard Ebright--he says the Varsity Club team (Alisa, Heather, Katherine and Bailey) won first place. Alisa was second overall and Heather third. Not sure about the Coatsville team, but just looking at the times it seems they are likely to also be repeat winners--but let's wait for the official call.

Coatesville took 3rd in HS Varsity (without Chase, since he does not go to the high school yet)

Reply by FredR on Tue Apr 19, 2011 at 11:12 amEd I recall something like this happening last year as well. I'm sure Scott will be able to eventually explain it, but the gist of the rule I recall is that the teammates representing a "school" have to attend the same "school building". It's not, for example, based on school district. I could see where that might well apply when there are many highschools in the same district, but it seems a shame to apply it to, say Middle/Intermediate schools attached to a single HighSchool, if that's the case. Why penalize someone from running "up".

Reply by edscott on Tue Apr 19, 2011 at 11:27 amI agree, especially since some districts have 7-12 in one building, some have 9-12, and others have 10-12.

Reply by Guy-O on Thu Apr 21, 2011 at 1:03 amBack in 2009, Mike Minium and I tried to get the (then) USOF BOD to amend the rules to permit "vertical eligibility", starting at the 2010 IS in Ohio. That would have allowed middle school juniors to run on their future high school's team. Allowing "running up" for juniors has always been encouraged -- except in this situation.
The BOD pretty much tabled the idea based on one -- admittedly valid -- concern: How to write the rules to cover most, if not all, situations, while not weakening the basic concept of Interscholastic competition, that being competition between schools.
My challenge to all of you who want to see vertical eligibility happen: Propose some actual rules that will accomplish your desired goals and pass muster with the OUSA BOD.
