Hi Karl, Simple request (except Kent may need to get a bit  involved) - to help DVOA members remember whom was the Event director or course setter, I have noted in March and April 2010 at least 5-6 persons names that are omitted from the DVOA  Club electronic "schedule" - To make it fairer for reminding people before the best ED/CS vote whatever - votes are "Due" all the Eventr directors & course setters should have there "names" up and identified on the web Schedule for 2010

Like I do know - Rick Slater - was the Oct 30 Course setter (Wash Crossing)  but that is not reflected on the 2010 schedule/event list  (its blank).  there are many other blanks.  Please see if persons with better memory thatn I remmeber who ran those various events with no names and no "canceled"  notices...  I assume they happened, right?  I have a rough count of 39 DVOA meet/hiking events in 2010 (discounting the Non-DVOA events) , but there could be more...  can not tell as some events are blank as I said (guess I have to cross check on the results page maybe???.

Also, If I may be so bold, why don't we have an NEW catagory of award for the DVOA ... general person who is "NOT"  a club "official" who - appears the most times as a plain meet helper?  One would have to have the meet report(s) or all the 2010 years Briar Patch "newsletters" to check into this one  (else call the meet directors or check the Kent person summary's (to see if they were at  least "at" a few meets that can be investigated) if two members are relatively close).  Just a suggestion.  In this way the regular younger members have a reason to come to get a award also, not just course set or Event directing as they are quite difficult for the beginners or newer members...

    I suspect this one would be easier if all kept good records after the event is over.  Also suggest while say member at-large Bob Burg (to pick a 2010 example only) as a club "Course setter" at Rutgers this past Sept;

he also did a map part revision /field checking and CAD Drafting effort  (2 extra Rutgers map behind the scenes effort),  and stuff like that would be counted as a tie breaker (except that he is a club offical already)  what do you think?

I'm not sure why many of the event directors and course setters do not show up on the 2010 events.  It could have been caused by the relatively recent linking of the schedule page to the membership database.  It is probable that I can add them back in, but it would be good to have confirmation of who did each event in the event my memory is faulty...  20+ years of event and event directors sometimes run together.  Embarassed  I'll put the ones in that I'm sure of and email me the ones that are still blank.. or wrong.... in a couple hours...

OK, I've inserted all the data as best my records and memory will allow.  Let me know if something is wrong or if you are one of the course setters I left out.  My main concern is leaving out did the Star Village courses.. I'm guessing Steve and/or Petr..  but don't remember.

Ed: thanks for filling in the schedule. The problem was caused by the change over to using the online member database for the event directors and course setters.

Another way to see the list is to go to the yearly Event Summary. You can navigate to the page by clicking Rankings in the main menu, then checking the Event Summary checkbox, and then click the View Rankings button.

Wow, I didn't know the Event Summary page existed!  Pretty cool!

BTW, the numbers in the Participants column appear to actually be the numbers of maps (starts).

It would be helpful to have a list of the novice event directors and course setters for 2010.  Thanks.

This link http://www.dvoa.org/rank/show_rank.php?cat=event_sum&yr=2010 is a great reference for the Event Directors and Course Setters.  I think that everyone on the list is a veteran except for the following: Doug Sevon was a first time director for Tyler and course setter for Quail Hill, The Geists were novice event directors for the Schuylkill Center event, Hugh MacMullan III was a first time course setter at Ridley Creek.  If this is inaccurate please let me know.

Please pass along any comments to me at swedemd at yahoo dot com.

    Thanks,
    Karl

Karl - I think Hugh MacMullan III has set courses many times in the past but just not recently  (in fact, he was probably one of the first DVOA course setters).  He is certainly not a novice!

I like the concept of Mac as a novice!  Reminds me that I'll always have more to learn!

I've set 6 - 8 courses at Ridley Creek since 1973 - although only one other on the current map. So: no awards for me; and, as you know, I regard myself as already "awarded" enough by DVOA just by us being so close to perfect.
As to still being a "novice" after 37 years, I plead "somewhat guilty." I am, for example, rethinking (once again) my whole compass (baseplate/thumb), magnifier (or not), glasses (or not) approach to excellence (well, above averageness); and, in case no one else has noticed I THINK I might be the only orienteer who managed to get ranked - for the DECADE - on Brown, Green, Red and Blue Courses (not ranked very high, but ranked). Merry Christmas, and see you all at our Annual Meeting.

I seem to have created a lot of confusion without meaning to.  My previous post should have been for Hugh MacMullan the IVth.  I thought that young Hugh did the courses at Ridley but I have since found out that, as usual, the father does all the work and the kids get the credit. (Not that I have any resentment to my kids surpassing me in all things physical).

So I guess the bottom line is that the only novice course setter we have for 2010 is Doug Sevon.  Hmm, I wonder who will win that category.

Is ther a cut off for being a novice? Once seems too low, maybe three?

I was thinking of adding Billy Allaband and Sam Reed to the mix for their novish status but I think the spirit of these awards is to honor anyone that steps up to take on the task of course setting for the very first time.
