tips for success at President's Cup

Topic created by Nancy on Thu Jan 22, 2015 at 8:49 pmThe special format for the 2015 President's Cup event on Sunday, January 25, is going to focus on the thinking aspect of the sport. This special-format event will test your knowledge of the control descriptions on the control sheet; it will combine features of Trail-O with traditional foot orienteering. As in Trail-O, each control feature will have more than one flag. Participants will punch the control that matches the control description. Unlike Trail-O, there will definitely be a flag that matches the control description. Points will be awarded for punching the correct control box; points will be subtracted for punching the incorrect control box. High score wins. In the event of a tie, fastest time will determine the winner.
Two versions will be offered, a short and a long format (long being a relative term; it is at Springton Manor, after all!).Tip 1: If you received the latest issue of the club's newsletter, which just came out, you may want to re-read the article on pag 20-21. The article explains the significance of the columns on the control-description sheet.
Tip 2: You also might want to check out the tab on this website: For Beginners/What is Orienteering, which has a link to the International Specifications for Control Descriptions. The forecast as of this writing is for a sunny and seasonably warm day on Sunday. Registration will be set up inside the Carriage House at Springton Manor, with heat and heated restrooms. I hope to see you on Sunday. -

Reply by KathleenG on Sun Jan 25, 2015 at 10:45 pmToday was a lot of fun! Also a good way to practice Trail O. Found that being able to stand at the control didn't actually make it much easier than viewing from afar as in "real" Trail O

Reply by edscott on Mon Jan 26, 2015 at 2:21 pmYes, it was a good event and a learning experience. I'm one of those people that rarely uses the clue sheet beyond the 4th column, unless I'm approaching what I think is the right feature, see no flag, and want to be sure it is supposed to be behind it. Spent a bit of time at a couple controls standing and wondering.

Nice event, Nancy.
My first trail-O format. As usual, alot of fun but a humbling experience.
