French Creek South ? Crow?s Nest
Natural Land Trust & PA State Gamelands #43
Sunday September 28, 2014
The event this Sunday will be held on the 1:10,000 5M contour map produced by Mike Bertram in 2012. We will have the registration at the Land Trust Preserve barn/office located on Piersol Road just north of the junction with Harmonyville Road.
From the intersection of PA Route 100 and PA Route 23, take Route 23 west and look for orienteering signs at the junction of PA Route 23 and Trythall Road. Take Trythall Road north to the ?T? junction with Harmonyville Road. Make a left onto Harmonyville Road and then a right onto Piersol. Orienteering signs will be posted by 8am Sunday. There will also be signs from the junction of PA Route 345 and Harmonyville Road leading you to the event site.
PARKING
Parking at the Preserve center is very limited and overflow parking will be just west of the center on Harmonyville Road and also limited. Please carpool if possible and follow the directions of the parking volunteers on the day of the event.

Registration and bathrooms will be located at the Preserve Event Center. Control descriptions will be printed on the map but additional descriptions will be available at registration for those who wish to carry them separately. Downloading of your course and results will also be at the Preserve Event Center.
START
The ?Start? will be located about 500 meters from the event and is an easy walk. Orange flagging will lead you from registration to the start. Please be careful when walking along the road and crossing the road on the way to the start. There will be some water at the start but no bathrooms.

(Monday 9/22) At present the weather is expected to be in the low 80?s and sunny. Water will be provided for all courses but may not always be at a control. Some water stops will be located at course road crossings and have been marked on the map with a ?red cup?. There will be 3 of these on the map. Please respect the needs of all by using the cups provided and please do not fill water bottles at these stops so there will be enough water for all participants.
All Courses: Many of the fields are being used for corn and soybean crops and have not been harvested. These fields have been printed with red out-of-bounds cross hatching and should not be crossed. All fields have an open perimeter that can be utilized to go around the crop. Private property within the course design has also been marked using the red out-of-bounds cross hatching.
Intermediate & Advanced Courses: Much of the open woods on the map has become overgrown with nasty bramble or is thicker than normal due to the time of year for the event. To make the courses as pleasant as possible we have tried to keep you in the best woods and therefore you will find that controls are located close to one another and some of the courses will (loop)2 so it is important to keep track of where you are to avoid going to wrong controls.
FINISH
You will pass near the finish on the way to start. The walk back is from the Finish to the event center is just over 300M and an easy walk. Please remember to download at the Event center before leaving. Results will also be posted there.

Please note that there are not as many "?s" for this Sunday's event at Crow's Nest as the original announcement shows. It appears that hyphens and apostrophes convert to "?" when upload from Word. Please ignore them in the announcement. The only question should be ...will you be there!

Reply by Mac on Sun Sep 28, 2014 at 10:55 pmI just wanted to mention that I thought the Brown Course was particularly well thought-out, with options around the worst of the woods (although I didn't always find them), lots of water on the course(s), great signage to the meet itself, some streamered trails and all of the other bells and whistles that indicate a lot of thought and effort on the part of the course setter - Mark Frank. I believe that Crows' Nest is a challenging place to set good courses, and that Mark did a fine job today. Thanks, Mark.
