Map & Course Notes

Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation

a forested Boy Scout camp

  • Vegetation - predominantly open hardwood forest, with a few clearings, and some detailed thicker vegetation.
  • Water features - only a few small streams, but a number of dry (brown) ditches.
  • Rock - no large rock features, a few boulders, and possibly no cliffs, some areas of stony ground, but often below the threshold for mapping.
  • Topography - a gently sloping hillside with only a few significant contour features.
  • Manmade features - a dense and complex trail network, ranging from dirt roads to narrow paths, many manmade camp related features, including  buildings, pavilions and misc. objects, the most numerous being tent platforms (small black squares)
  • Summary - We expect  Hawk Mtn Scout Res to be a technical sprint venue, not related to control sites, but with very challenging en-route navigation, involving many route choices and decision points.
  • Map - New 1:5,000 scale, 5m contours, improved ISOM map, lidar base map by Eddie Bergeron and Greg Balter, fieldwork and drafting, by Vladimir Zherdev, completed in June 2016, with revisions by Sam Kolins 2017.

Green 2.1 60 11
Red 2.3 70 13
Blue 2.8 90 15

Berks Campus of Penn State University

a mixed-landscape suburban college campus.

  • Vegetation- a combination of paved surfaces, open mowed grass, and forest. The forest tends to have thicker vegetation, but with some limited areas of good running.
  • Water features- none, unless you count stormwater structures or ornamental features.
  • Rock-  a few cliffs and boulders, mostly small.
  • Topography- rolling, but not especially detailed.
  • Manmade features- for a college campus, only a moderate density of buildings, pavement, and associated objects. A few unpaved trails. Evidence of features (buildings, garden plantations) from the previous estate.
  • Summary- The PSU Berks Campus should provide fast, enjoyable running and pleasant aesthetics.
  • Map- New 1:5,000 scale, 2.5m contours, ISSOM map. lidar base map by Ed Despard, augmented by Vladimir Zherdev using Google Street View. Fieldwork and drafting by Vladimir Zherdev, completed December 2016.

Mount Penn

a forested hill mass overlooking the City of Reading
Click here for some photos of the area taken by the course setter.

  • Vegetation - predominantly hardwood forest, much with above average visibility, especially in autumn leaf-off conditions, but also a variety of understory vegetation of varying thicknesses. There have been many vegetation changes since the previous mapping, with a general  trend to more open vegetation.
  • Rock - many rock features, but mostly small, including numerous stony areas, mostly mapped as stony ground. Many small boulders, but only a few areas with larger boulder and boulder field detail. A few cliff features.
  • Water features - a couple clusters of small streams and marshes, but mostly very little surface water.
  • Topography - mostly gentle to moderate meandering slopes, except for the steep west facing slope towards the city.  Only a few prominent topo details.
  • Manmade features - Most important is the trail network, which was already moderately dense  on the original map. Since then a whole additional trail network has been created, primarily by mountain bikers, characterized by often indirect, meandering shapes, adding complexity to route choices.
Arguably less important, but perhaps more interesting is the abundance of historic artifacts, related to the proximity to the City of Reading. This includes features related to industrial activity, as well as a colorful history of resorts and speakeasies. This has left us with quarries,  the abandoned gravity railroad  (map & photos), cold cellars, springhouses, charcoal terraces, The Pagoda, The Fire Tower, logging related trails and roadbeds that when sloping, have evolved into ditches,  some scenic roadways (Skyline Drive, and Duryea Drive) and many assorted ruins, such as Kuechler's Roost.
  • Summary -This Mount Penn terrain doesn’t have extreme technical difficulty, but the trail network is likely to provide many route choice opportunities. The busing plans will allow a high elevation Start and a much lower elevation Finish, which will likely create plenty of net downhill, with limited climb, especially for the shorter courses.
  • Map - New 1:10000 scale, 5m contours, ISOM, lidar base map by and initial mapping by Greg Balter in 2015, with extensive additional fieldwork and drafting by Vladimir Zherdev completed in 2017.
Special note. The maps for Mount Penn’s BrownX and BrownY courses will be at 1:7500 scale, 5m contours.
