Does anyone know how we register for the Nov 6 & 7 A event at Hickory Run?  According to out website A event page the early mail in deadline is Oct 1 but I can't find any place to register?  Are we going back to the old way of registering with the USOF form and mailing it to Dave Urban, the registrar?  Could someone please let me know if I'm missing something or what?

    Thanks

There will be online registration for the Hickory Run A Event, but it is not quite ready to go live yet. It should be ready to go live later this week.

The URL Robert posted is correct, but please do NOT register. If you register now, your registration will be incomplete. Please wait until there are links on the event page pointing you to online registration. There will also be a notice on DVOA's home page, and Dave or I will post a message here.

That is why I always ask for username/password protection until the registration site goes live.

I have never attended an A-meet before, and I have a question about the upcoming Hickory Run Rocks event.  Why is the fee so much more than a typical event?  Thank you.

The expenses for hosting a nationally sanctioned event are considerable.  First, we are using a brand new map and a new maps of this size cost between $10,000 and $20,000 to make.  Because we are using brand new maps, all competitors from across the country will be on a level playing field - no home field advantage of having seen the terrain before - and that makes the first use of any map special.   We will use the map for local events in the coming years, but we can charge less at local events if the first event using the map recoups a good portion of the costs of making the map.  Because new maps are not that common, competitors are willing to pay higher prices to compete on them.

In addition, there are lots of other miscellaneous expenses associated with an A event.  Because this is a nationally sanctioned event and counts towards the US rankings, we have to pay Orienteering USA (the national orienteering governing body that provides insurance and other things that we need to host events of any sort) a per person sanctioning fee.  In order to have courses that meet national (and sometimes international) standards, there are also sometimes fees for certified consultants.  And for this event,  in order to have the best possible courses, we need to have buses to take some competitors to the start on one of the days - and renting buses costs money.   We will be providing awards to the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) in all the age categories - some 30 of them!   All these little things add up, and add to the expense of putting on an A event.

    Steve,

Sandy covered major points why A-Meet fees are higher than local events. In addition I would like to add that A-Meets are the major source of money which we invest into maps productions. Without hosting A-Meets it's almost impossible to have new or revise existing maps. Otherwise you have to wait years until you'll have enough resources. On the other hand, prices are NOT so high in comparison to any local trail or road runs - the entry fee is usually at least $25 and I'm not talking about higher level half/full marathons, etc.

The quality of courses from design point is much higher than the ones at local events. However, some of our local events have courses comparable or even higher quality of A-meets. Also, courses have to meet USOF (Orineteering USA) requirements, which means dont' expect them being on the easy side, especially when we talk about Hickory Run terrain.

This past week at Hickory Run I happened to look up at the stars. Since I know of a few orienteers who own thier own telescopes I was wondering if we could have a star party during the A meet.

Maybe I should try navigating by the stars?  Or, should I try a sextant instead of a compass during the day?
