I want to thank everyone that pitched in today to keep me from driving the bus over the cliff. This was my first event without training wheels (i.e., Ed or Mary) and it was quite the challenge. It may have been a soggy day, but I hope enough people enjoyed themselves to consider it a success.
Robert Buraczynski drove up from Delaware on Saturday to help us hang controls because he couldn't make it on Sunday. The weather certainly worked out for him... Bob Gross squeezed what was possible from the last of the FCN maps. Roger Hartley passed on to me one of the most organized kits ever seen, and put in extra effort today at Start and elsewhere. Steve Mones managed Start for a long time (and in the rain)--longer than I certainly intended anyway. (One of the ways the volunteer sign up system can help; no one signed up for the later times and Steve got stuck until he was rescued. PLEASE sign up and make an ED's job so much easier!). Mary and Mark Frank arrived with the tents and set up the registration area (and Mary worked there much of the day). Petr Hartman and Dave Urban stuck around for the messy (figuratively and literally today) job of control pickup. Vadim ("the strongman") Masalkov was everywhere performing feats of strength (and helping with parking, control pickup and cleaning up the site). And we gave Scott Thatcher a knife and he slaughtered the watermelons.
I especially want to thank my youngsters Sam and Bailey for making it a family affair. Sam jumped into the course designer job with his usual relish even though he had lots of other distractions. Bailey took care of all the epunch work, before, during and after the event. I'm a lucky Dad.
And last but not least, I'd like to thank the people that came out and had a good time, brought some food, helped some newcomers, and the usual good things we do. I'm sorry to say the "picnic experiment" was not what I had imagined either, but considering the circumstances (soggy pretzels anyone?) it went alright and is probably worth doing again sometime.
