Fair Hill Big Elk Chapel April 29th

Topic created by BevH on Sun Apr 8, 2012 at 8:14 amThe woods at Fair Hill are glorious--open, bright, and mostly runnable. We expect a bit of greening up between now and the end of the month. We are planning White through Red courses, ranging in length from about 2 km to about 8 km. We will post the course information about a week ahead of time.
The map was made in 2005. Most mapped root stocks have nearly disappeared, while many huge new root stocks--especially from the hurricane and last October's early snow--are not mapped. In addition, some of the mapped trails are hard to see or semi-abandoned, and unmapped trails have been created or emphasized by trailbiking. For the most part, the map has good fidelity, still, regarding vegetation.
In planning this event and the course designs, we have had to factor in the fact that a "buggy ride," scheduled for Saturday April 28th uses Sunday as its rain date. They don't expect a huge number of buggies, but our usual parking/registration area on the east side of Gallaher Road has been reserved by them, so we will be sharing the main gravel lot at the corner of Big Elk Chapel Road with the public. PLEASE CAR POOL, if you can, as parking is likely to be tight, if the weather is good on Sunday.
White through Brown courses will not cross any roads or the carriage roads used by the buggy ride. Green and Red will cross roads and the buggy routes. It will be very important for runners on advanced courses to READ THE COURSE SETTERS NOTES, as we want everyone to be safe, and we will be removing the time spent crossing the road from the elapsed time in some but not all crossings.
Hope to see everyone on the 29th of April!
