Elk Neck Classic Course?
-
Topic created by ssotingco on Wed Mar 14, 2012 at 10:36 amBeing fairly new to DVOA (within last few years) I was not sure what is meant by the rarely used "Classic" course as noted on the info page for this weekend at Elk Neck. I also saw that there were zero controls listed for every color course, unsure why this is?

Reply by furlong47 on Wed Mar 14, 2012 at 7:14 pmThe majority of DVOA events are still what I would consider Classic courses. I'm not sure who wrote that bit or where the thought that they are 'rare' came from. Perhaps in regard to national events, which have been headed more toward the Sprint, Middle, and Long formats. If you are used to local DVOA events I would think you shouldn't notice anything different about the courses at Elk Neck.
I would imagine the course setter sent the lengths and climb and just didn't include info on the number of controls to be posted. -

As for the different formats of orienteering event please refer to USOF rules found at http://orienteeringusa.org/rules#M -
Reply by Sandy on Wed Mar 14, 2012 at 8:10 pmThere has been a trend over the years for courses to generally have more controls. I'm not saying this is good or bad, just a noticeable trend. The courses at Elk Neck look to have on the low end of the number of controls we are used to, and so closer to what are traditionally considered "classic" courses. Looking forward to the challenge!
