Topic created by edscott on Tue Jan 10, 2012 at 9:10 pmJust a quick note that the column labled "Participants" on page 11 of the BP closely resembles the number of maps used on regular courses, but not the total number of participants. It also does not include score events, and has some other minor omissions totaling about 260 maps. The total participation is usually about 1.3 people/map.

Reply by WindWalker on Tue Jan 10, 2012 at 9:32 pmSo is the latest issue out? If so I didn't get one. I've been waiting. Heck I've been a member almost a year and still haven't got a single one. The powers that be said this was fixed and I would surely get the latest and greatest version. Maybe since I'm way up here in Schuylkill County where mail is still delivered by horse and buggy it just hasn't gotten here yet?
Thanks,

Reply by Nancy on Tue Jan 10, 2012 at 10:53 pmThe latest issue of the Briar Patch was mailed yesterday and started hitting members' mailboxes today.Ed, I copied the chart from the DVOA Results Page/Rankings. Could someone update that column header on the chart?Mike, you were on the distribution list, so if you don't already have a copy, it should be appearing any day now.

Reply by edscott on Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 0:09 amOk that explains it. Score courses, relays, etc... do not count toward rankings, nor do groups; so a "participant" on that chart must be a result that gets entered into the rankings data.

Reply by Guy-O on Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 1:59 amHow are total starts (for OUSA rechartering) calculated from the results and stats that we can see?

From some quick checking, the column in the Rankings/Event Summary chart labeled "Participants" appears to be the number of maps. I've been meaning to ask Kent about this, but haven't gotten to it yet. However, even this column doesn't fully capture all the club has done because the map count for the large Scouting events (MASOC, Washington Crossing [104 maps], Quail Hill [189 maps]) is not included.

Reply by Sandy on Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 9:00 amStarts are calculated for OUSA rechartering by going through all the events one by one and adding the number of results (including scout events).

Reply by edscott on Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 9:39 amOk I found the page that Nancy used.. never knew that one was there or I'd have asked Kent to fix it. That last column seems to just be counting maps sold on courses white through blue. Notice all the score events are 0 participants. Relay results at the Mid Atlantics and the summer picnic have been stripped out, and as Doug noted the scout participation isn't there. The actual numbers for 2011 are 5023 participants on 3847 maps.

Reply by Vadim on Wed Jan 11, 2012 at 9:52 amWhat is available on the results web page is one thing and in some cases it either missing necessary data or it is slightly off. The other thing is what every Event Director reports back after each event and this information together with results were used as a source for the OUSA rechartering.

Reply by markwalsh on Sun Jan 15, 2012 at 10:44 pmWind ......I see why you were excited about receiving the lastest version of the Briar Patch ......you authored one of the articles.
I've been a member for one year as well and this is the first edition I received.
I love the cool NOAC logo and the informative article by Sandy.
Sounds like it will be a first class event in the capable hands of the experienced DVOA leaders and volunteers.
Keep up the great work!
Great stories about Washington Crossing and Dakota Rogaining championships.
Do they have any longer rogaines in our area longer then the typical races.
I know the NYARA usually does one that is about 6hrs but I'm thinking 12 and up.

Our Briar Patch is probably wandering around Plymouth Meeting and Blue Bell. We thought we told everyone about our move to Blue Bell but not everyone has found our new nest. Maybe we can pick up a copy at the winter meeting.
Hmmm, now what to bring for the pot luck? I could bring knishes. Anyone else?
(PS this is an old Philly kids game.) -
