     PRESS RELEASE FOLLOWS

This is an breaking news Presser that the Hudson Valley Orienteering (HVO) club of north NJ & lower NY, and Orienteering (O) map/project manager Bob Rycharski a HVO and DVOA member, was recently awarded ... a small expense Youth Mapping Grant (YPG) OUSA fund/ to cover the future HVO club members, plans to create a LIDAR topographical and detailed Orienteering/training Hiking map of Warinanco Park, Rosselle, NJ ... the award was announced on  2 Feb 2020. Assistance is also credited to an OUSA member Mr. Gordon Hunter for advanced basemap/LIDAR production.

The HVO led proposal (started in Nov 2019) was one of 5 or more map grants awarded this 2020/Calendar year (nationwide) by the Orienteering USA national federation.  The application was sent in in late November 2019, and competed with about a dozen school/map proposals. This project awaits detailed national Orienteering USA club Instructions and grant rules before actually starting field work and computer CAD efforts.

Work is planned to begin in mid March, and the mapping project may take from 6 to 8 months for Bob R and Paul B to complete.  Afterwards, when the new map is complete and vetted and checked as a detailed copy in miniature, ... a copy of the NJ park, Linden High School JROTC cadets (the benefactor O team and Bob R's "client", whom may also help in the vetting process), & teacher/coach Mr. M. DeJean, and the HVO club will plan an educational inauguration/ map reading/beginners clinic, on the developing topo map (pending future permission from the Union County Parks reservation dept. of course, who nicely approved the concept in advance of the award). We /HVO have preliminary seed plans to hold beginners map hiking training in the Fall for NJ area schools with orienteering teams, and/or local Scout troops or other tbd interested youth groups.  Warinanco is an urban park of about 660 acres or  ~1.25 km sq. give or take, and will be an awesome sprint and beginners event map.  Thanks and a tip of my purple O hat, to the YPT OUSA managers Barb Bryant and her OUSA committee for this award.

Thought you would enjoy the Press Announcement.

    Sincerely, Bob Rycharski  DVOA
