Event and course notes for French Creek North score-o

Location/directions: Registration will be near the Scott's Run parking lot, which is marked on the event schedule page. Most likely, you'll have to park along the road past the official parking lot. There's a mobile sign up along Park Rd (the main drag through the park) saying it will be closed to repair a culvert at a "TBD" date in November. If/when I find out if that will cause a problem, I'll provide an update on the eboard.

Time: Registration will open ~10AM for an 11AM mass start. The finish time is 1PM and we'll start control pickup as soon as everyone gets something to eat and recovers (~1:30). Remember--set your clocks back Saturday night! Early arrival is greatly appreciated, especially if renting an epunch stick, so there's time to register everyone before the start.

Course/Map: 30 controls spread across the map, with a mix of easy to hard technical difficulty. By design, many controls vary in difficulty depending on the direction of attack. The 1:10,000 scale map is a portion of a larger map used in last year's rogaine, with some important information cut off--like much of the legend. Study up or bring a spare if needed. The map is pretty new and accurate. Because of the wet summer, "intermittant" water features are still pretty wet, and some areas are greener than marked, particularly in lower areas on the south side of the map.

Event: Get as as many points as you can in two hours. 3pts for control numbers in the 30s, 4 in the 40s, 5 in the 50s and 6 in the 60's. No peeking at the map before the start time. Finishing after 1PM will have severe point penalties (5 points for each minute or part thereof late). Remember to bring a watch! Ties will be decided by total time punched at the finish. Collecting all controls appears to be ~14km. Older epunch sticks will work as long as you don't go wild repunching controls.

Food/water: Several water controls are distributed around the map--everyone should probably be able to pass at least 2 of them in two hours. Food at finish--which should be fun with everyone being there at the same time.

Help: There should be plenty of people to ask for some instruction before the start if you want it. The list of desired volunteer positions is posted--or just pitch in when you get there. Because of the format the effort should be limited and easy to spread around. The key people will be at registration and the computer to get everyone registered if a large crowd shows up. Let me know ahead of time if you can help out.

The long-range weather forecast looks pretty nice! I hope to see lots of you there.

There are a sufficient number of white-to-yellow level controls in a zone nearest the start/finish to keep people who normally do those courses entertained for 2 hrs (I think). However, doing so probably would involve some road crossings/routes and longer legs than would normally be encountered. So this kind of thing probably isn't as "kid friendly" as the usual white course. But then, people can choose to make of the controls that are there as they see fit, comfortable, able, etc.

Wouldn't you know--there are 31 controls.  If you think running the table is possible (roughly 14km in 2hrs) and you are using/renting an old SI-8 model epunch stick (a very small population, I'd think), then you might want to trade or get a different model ahead of time.
