Topic created by dparson on Wed May 23, 2018 at 2:44 pmI have been updating this USGS-derived map between Port Clinton & The Pinnacle (on the AT) in NE Berks for the last 2 summers, hope to get out and do some more fieldwork & map improvements this summer. Reply by Orienteer7 on Thu May 24, 2018 at 2:38 pmI held an event I believe in 1979 out of Blue Rocks campground (Lehardstsville sp/) on a black and white map that I revised from what Mac may have used prior?? Very low turnout but the club was pretty small then. We were charging 50 cents for members and $1 for non-members. I don't believe we have been back since then.Mark

I get bored with step counting over long distances when adding these trails, and so I stop counting when I do. Automatic walking-route capture via GPS should work, except for maybe some hollows.Port Clinton fire tower would make a nice staging area for a 12-hour rogaine. Not volunteering, just saying. ;-)I do hope to design a set of FC courses for an event next spring, when I am on sabbatical leave

Julie from Lancaster uses this app and may have more experience with doing so for MapMyWalk. Reply by edscott on Sat May 26, 2018 at 11:24 amLooking at our Route gadget map results it seems to me that the GPS usually gets the outline of a trail correct but sometimes has it parallel to the real trail. The google aerial photos, if taken in winter, often show enough bits of trail that the GPS data could be slid into the right spot.

Reply by shiatsuron on Sun May 27, 2018 at 7:50 pmGOALS Adventure Racing has run 12 hour adventure races for years out of the Civil Air Patrol facility that is in the middle of this map, about 1km west of the drawn arrow. I set a foot section for them last year on the main mountain/Dan's Pulpit, that is the northern part of this map, not the spur that is the Pinacle.A rogaine there would indeed be fun. The north facing ridge that runs down into the canyon from the AT is infuriating. Just smooth terrain is mapped and it is filled with dead fall. In any case, because the AT runs through it a rogaine would have to be created as to not to encourage participants to run along it. According to the National Park Service the AT is off limits to racers. And since the AT loops around and is all over the place, including all the places your track correctly shows, I would seriously look at the newer version of the quad (circa 2015). It might have the AT right. Your .gpx tracks should flow nicely onto the new geo-referenced PDF quads.

Reply by dparson on Mon May 28, 2018 at 10:49 amYeah, that south-pointing arrow is what appears to be the start of a trail in state game lands, although I am pretty sure that it peters out. Haven't made it to that north face of The Pinnacle yet, but your description sounds a lot like the woods between the Pinnacle and the hilltop just to its south, "filled with dead fall" and also a lot of boulders.My next mission is to take the trail northeast from the Pinnacle towards the Kempton Rod & Gun Club and see whether there are any substantial trails branching north or south from it. I carried my 3-year-old nephew up that trail on my back the day before I got married in 1975, but when I asked last year about hiking up it, the Rod & Gun Club were adamant about their private property restrictions. We used to park & go up there all the time, back in the 1970s.I didn't know about the AT restrictions. My nephew and I did the SVO Rogaine on South Mountain (east of Chambersburg) in 2004, and we definitely hit the AT at some point, don't recall using it for a route. A rogaine starting at the Port Clinton fire tower could avoid most of the AT on the map, although it seems a shame.Any suggestions for a GPS tracking device to buy? When it comes to my hobbies, I am something of a Luddite, despite being a computer science professor, but given the amount of time/effort in capturing these trails, the improvement in accuracy is worth it.

Garmin makes several nice models, and many in DVOA who route gadget things can recommend theirs. I have a Forerunner 410 from 2013, but I am sure newer models have improvements.Ricg
