Next year marks the 50th anniversary of civilian orienteering in North America, and it happened right in our back yard (Valley Forge, to be exact).

Many of us have talked about various ways to mark the occasion, and now it's time to take it to the next step.

We've scheduled an organizing meeting for Saturday, October 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Myrick Center. (This is in conjunction with our annual Night-O event so that you can orienteer as well as talking about it!)

    Some suggestions we've heard are:
    • having 50 controls out at every event,
    • having a special #50 control flag,
    • holding 50 events (we will need 50 course setters to step up to the plate Innocent),
    • holding a spring series weeknights in the late spring/early summer
    • special event at the November A event

We hope you'll be able to join us to generate other ideas and to move the ideas into actual plans. If you're not able to join us on Oct. 29 but have ideas to share, please do, either by adding to this topic or sending me an email. (Click on my name next to the post.)

This one caught my attention. What are you thinking for difficulty? Would the flags be brought in at night afterwards, or do you expect the ED to be free the next day? Would there be 'awards' for multiday results? (say best 3 results from 4 events?)

It could be a lot of fun, but travel may get in the way, or make it 'only' for a small , closer set of people.

Nate O had an idea to have sprints in Chester County Parks in the evening, possibly score-o style.. both for new and experienced.  He even said he'd be willing to course set them all (which is our usual limitation).

Here is an example in Washington State:

re 50 events, I suggest that we count everything very loosely -- if six elite runners get together for the opening of an envelope, count it.  All of Mary's motivational events, count them.  Attendance at away A meets, count that meet.  Boy and Girl Scout things as well.
Anybody has any suggestions, explain how to implement them or volunteer.
And the winter meeting should be something special.  I haven't thought that through.  :-)
    See you at Myrick.

How about a retrO event: B&W maps, draw your own course, and pin punch. This could be a seperate event or held in conjunction with a W/E or National event.

I like the sprint series idea, but it will have to have a nice late start window if it is on weeknights and you want it well attended. Some people work and have zero option of leaving early Frown and then still have to drive to the site. If it is going to be in summer when vegetation makes many of our more traditional maps torturous, may as well put it on the weekends instead of normal events. Then you could offer 2-3 different courses on each map for people to do and make the trip more worthwhile. It's kind of cruddy to spend 3 hours driving and most of a tank of gas to run for 20 minutes.

At QOC's 40th they had basically a birthday party with a huge cake with number 40 candles on one of the evenings during their A-meet.

A ROGAINE with 50 controls. Or a 50 hour long ROGAINE Surprised I guess you'd need a huge area for that.

Not related to the number 50 at all (though they probably could be made to do so in some way) but fun past events I'd love to see again:  a camping weekend like we had at Frances Slocum, O-Marathon/Half Marathon, lower key Bike-O that don't require technical riding (like we had at Norristown and Lower Perkiomen)

Do we have the maps from those first events?

If so, could simply put on one of those events, with the old maps?

    Orienteering re-enactment.

The first event ever was at Valley Forge, at the parking lot for Washingtons's Headquarters. It went south on the Mt Misery map then crossed Valley Creek and came north on The Mt Joy map, all on USGS, and in Black and White.
We have re enacted this event twice in my time, once for the 30th, during an A event on Mt Joy, and once for the 40th, just as a stand alone.
Unfortunately, the current administration at Valley Forge frowns on orienteering, and makes permissoion extremly hard to obtain.

Perhaps Jeremy Colgan could help get a VF permit...

He pretty much resurrected the Dual at Silas this weekend, and seems to be the only HVOer capable of getting Harriman permits without onerous costs or restrictions.

If you ever have a chance to look at the back of the 40th anniversary sweatshirt, the white part is the first course.
