Event Director Notes:
Parking is limited, I hoping to have some volunteers parking cars in the morning. Please park as efficiently as possible. The parking lot off of Antietam Lake (at old Nature Center near Hill Road) is under construction, so that lot can’t be used as an overflow.
Erik has some designed some great courses. Come out and enjoy a fall day in the woods.
Course Setter Notes:
Come out to enjoy orienteering at Antietam Lake Park in coordination with the Berks County Parks System. We are fortunate to be able to share this beautiful property for a day with our friends at BCPS for orienteering events. This is your last chance to practice your orienteering skills in the Mount Penn area before the fall National Event next November.
The map: The map is from 2000. The courses are set to stay in the nicer parts of the woods (with alot of controls) which are mostly accurate with the exception of extra trails. Many of the trails are singletrack trails and are fairly recognizable. Their absence from the map keeps the advanced courses focused on contour and rock detail work rather than keeping track of trails. White and Yellow stay on the main wide paths of Antietam Lake Park and shouldn't have too many issues with this extra trails. Also, be aware that the fruit farm is not accurately mapped as it has become public since the map was drawn- there is no longer a fence (except a couple passable remains). The go control to finish will be flagged-might be best to follow!
Private Property and Sensitive Areas: Private Property near the courses is marked out of bounds, and should only affect Red. All courses will come close to the stream valley near the old parking lot by Antietam Lake- it is marked out of bounds as it is an environmentally sensitive area. The courses are designed to go around this area.
Advanced courses: Relatively small area used for Brown/Green/Red- many shared controls and many shorter legs to keep you in the most desirable woods. Have fun!
