Hiking Sticks

Topic created by kathyu on Mon May 30, 2016 at 12:09 pmI've noticed people using hiking sticks, sometimes one, sometimes two. What kind of terrain would be best to use them? any issues with your map and compass handling?

Reply by Sandy on Mon May 30, 2016 at 12:55 pmI always use one hiking pole when doing rogaines. I find that in a race where I am unlikely to run, having a pole is really nice especially in longer races. As I get tired, I use it more and more - both for balance and to help get up and down steep slopes.
I use one since I have a compass and map (and if 24 hours a flashligh) so too many things to juggle if I tried to carry two. (I use two when I am just hiking and not also navigating.) Since I use a thumb compass, I carry my map and compass in one hand and use the other hand for the pole. -
Reply by camperpat on Mon May 30, 2016 at 5:01 pmI always use 2 hiking poles while hiking. They really help up and down hills and give your upper body a work out too. I have never used them orienteering, but u never now! Pat

Reply by edscott on Mon May 30, 2016 at 5:11 pmI often use one when hiking, but have never taken one on a course. I have enough trouble coming back with my E-punch, compass, and hat. Have yet to lose my map......

Reply by kathyu on Mon May 30, 2016 at 6:23 pmFortunately, Nancy Lindeman of BAOC left a walking stick in our car at Anza Borrego, and we couldn't get it back to her. She said I should use it til we meet at a meet, so I'll take it with me to the rogaine and give it a try. Thanks for the replies.
