Topic created by rgbortz on Mon Jun 15, 2015 at 10:11 pmThanks to course setter Bob Meyer and Event Director Bob Gross for being willing to take the heat for whatever may come when volunteering to set courses in what is essentially summertime vegetation. I know first hand what it's like to set what looks like great courses on paper, go out in the landscape and the woods look beautiful for courses ..............then along comes day of event and bammm.........all socked in with green.
We are very fortunate to have people willing to set this time of year for us all to come out and give it a go.
Thank you to all involved with putting on this event.
Now to the 35 meters. Anyone who ran Red or Green and found control #68, 7 and 5 respectively.........
lucky you for bumping in to it. I was sure it was not placed correctly after searching for it along with a couple other runners for a few minutes, then decided one of two things has occured; either it was stolen or not set correctly and left for the next control. The attack points were rather obvious and relatively easy. There are several features in close proximity to the double depressions to verify being at the correct location to find the flag. To satisfy myself I requested to pick up that control at the end of the day. Sure enough the control, which I never found on my run, was placed 35 meters N.E. of the double depressions in a single depression, which I was within 5 meters of twice on my run but didn't see it due to the heavy vegetation, and no need to search this area needlessly since no depressions were mapped here. At 35 meters that puts the flag outside of the circle.
There are numerous depressions in this area so why only map the double ? I presume the mapper may have thought because of the proliferation of depressions the double stood out as usable for navigation?
It was still a great day in the jungle. -
Reply by CarolKlu on Tue Jun 16, 2015 at 12:08 pmI second the appreciation to Bob Meyer and Bob Gross for putting the event together. I know it takes many hours to do this. The course was challenging and I DNF looking for the 4th control on Green so I never got to chasing down #5. I also found myself confused as to depressions which were mapped and those that weren't, but then again maybe I was somewhere else.
