****  We are still using Pavilion 4 if at all possible so look for the signs when you arrive.....

The Park has requested that we use the upper parking lot and Pavilion 5 instead of Pavillion 4.  The lower lot by Pavillion 4 may still be muddy/icy on Sunday morning.  Both Pavilions are visible from the road so just look for the DVOA signs when you arrive!

Please do not pull onto the grassy areas.

From the FB Event page (thanks Wyatt!)

    • Wet wood is slippery.  Especially after the rain, and snow melt. Both the normal case logs on slopes in the forest, as well as several wood-plank walkways on some of the trails (which you’ll be happy are there to get you over the muddiest spots!)

    • There may be some snow remaining in places, especially north and east facing slopes in the forest, and on parts of the trails where the snow was packed down during the winter.  Consider shoes with good grip, and dry socks for afterwards.

    • The mapping is 16 years old.  It has help up well, and been updated in dozens of places where the course setter noticed things to improve before map printing, but there are still a few things to note:

    • Ignore rootstocks (brown X.)  16 years is a full generation of the rootstock falling/decay cycle.  Noticible rootstocks in the terrain are rarely on the map, and vice-versa.

    • Extra courses

      • In addition to White - Blue, we also have

        • a 5k Long White Navigation Race - long enough, and all-on-trails, to be a good workout for those experienced runners who are new to the navigation part of the sport.

          • Join others in an 11am mass-start, or start any time between 10am and 1pm - it will all be comparable with SportIdent chip timing.

        • a 1k Warmup available (free of charge) - all around the start-finish area field - designed especially for new navigation competitors to get a sense of what to do, before taking on the 5k.

    Course-specific:

    • Red & Blue

      • The map has been updated to be much better but a few things were discovered later than the map printing:

      • There are two trails on and map that are on possible route choices, which are no longer there.  These are overdrawn with a purple/red X, the symbol for forbidden route. You can go through the forest nearby, it just won’t be quite as fast is if the trail were still there.

      • A mapped indistinct trail near the dam’s spillway is now a gravel road, with a fence along part of it.  This has not been hand-drawn on your maps - and won’t affect any route choices - just don’t be surprised.
