Relay Team Coordinator reminder

Topic created by RogerHartley on Sat Mar 15, 2014 at 2:04 pmWe encourage all DVOA orienteers to form and join a relay team for the US Relay Championships at Fair Hill on April 26th. DVOA's Mason-Dixon Classic page will provide helpful information as to the relay point system, and enable you to decide what course legs you and your team members might run. Just a reminder that for those of you who would prefer to be assigned to a team, send Hugh MacMullan (mtw at macmullan dot org) your details (age, course leg you would be interested in running, etc.), and he will act as Relay Team Coordinator and assign teams.

Reply by Nancy on Sun Mar 16, 2014 at 7:30 amTo DVOAers who have never walked/run as part of a rely team: DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY!We think of orienteering for the most part as a solo experience. When you are part of a team, it is a different experience, but it's a difference you should experience at least once in your life. And if you've experienced it once, you know you'll survive, so you should do it again!Where better then on your home turf among friends? And this is new home turf: we've mapped a new area of the Fair Hill complex that extends into Pennsylvania. Be among the first to check out the new map!

Reply by Mac on Tue Mar 18, 2014 at 2:55 pmSo far I have a grand total of only five DVOAers who are looking for a relay team. I echo Nancy's thoughts about the fun of it all; and point out that if you don't win anything, you will have enjoyed yourself, AND, you can always blame the Relay Team Coordinator.I encourage you to form your own teams - that seems ideal to me; and I suggest you read carefully the event website for instructions as to points, likely courses and so forth. If you are reasonably sure that you are going to want me to assign you to a relay team, it would be easier for me and best for you to let me know sooner, rather than last minute. I'll be happy to e-mail you my thoughts in the matter.Mac

Reply by j-man on Wed Mar 19, 2014 at 2:33 pmEven though it is a relay format, it is real orienteering, on a new map of new terrain in the glorious Fair Hill area. This is some of the most pleasant terrain anywhere. So, you get to do real orienteering, as an individual, but part of a team. In relays, three average performances can produce a brilliant overall result. There are few things as satisfying as pulling together as a team for a better outcome than anyone could achieve on their own. There is nothing like coming round the bend to see the DVOA banners, tents, and regalia, and all your friends cheering you on.We will show the orienteering community we are the most enthusiastic, high-spirited club anywhere!DVOA is the defending champion in one category, but on our home turf, we should be able to vie in each of the three divisions and take up all the space on the podium. ;)

Reply by ErikEddy on Wed Mar 19, 2014 at 4:04 pmSigned up today and looking forward to it. For those who have signed up or will be signing up shortly can you post your intentions/current team on the board (perhaps we can set up a "permanent" forum somewhere else later)? A sort of "Marketplace for Relay Partners".
Personally, I am hoping to run on a competitive 6-point team (Y/Br/R) preferably on an advanced leg. Unfortunately, I am worth 0 points. Any competitive 3 pointers out there? Note, one leg is Yellow.
- Ages 17-20 or 40-49 receive 1 point,
- Ages 15-16 or 50-59 receive 2 points,
- Under 15 years of age or 60 and older receive 3 points.
- A female orienteer receives 2 points, in addition to any age points.

Reply by Sandy on Wed Mar 19, 2014 at 7:06 pmI'm worth 5 pts. but, unfortunately, I've seen the courses and so can not run officially. :(
But, I love relays and will be cheering like crazy for every DVOAer out there.
