Reply by kathyu on Mon May 20, 2013 at 11:38 amJust done cleaning and drying out the car, which did double duty for epunch shelter and generator. Yikes, just remembered i have to dry out the folding table and our chairs, which got soaked. I hope Tom got my email about drying out the equipment. Did the yellow course, and of course my glasses fogged up. Cat crap helped, but not perfect. The course was beautiful and I ran a good bit, enjoying the roller coaster parts of the trail and the soft footing on trails. Even the blueberries were not too annoying. Attendance was ok, considering the weather and upcoming Memorial Day festivities at Hickory Run. This was the second time the police showed up at an event I was at. Thank you, Bob, for running this event and setting these nice courses.

Reply by DaveUrban on Mon May 20, 2013 at 1:55 pmI was going parallell to Rt. 72, about 10m off the roadway, when six police cars lights blazing pullled up and told me to "stopit". They asked me a few questions and said they had a report of some guys chasing a female thru the wooods. I tried to explain Orienteering, no luck, and without even drawing their guns they let me go.
Bob - thanks for the event, really liked the courses. Making fewer mistakes in the Blueberries each time. -
Reply by wilburdeb on Mon May 20, 2013 at 2:09 pmHey Desparado Dave,
Does your wife know what you do on Sundays? Gallivanting around the woods all afternoon. -
Reply by bradleyhall on Mon May 20, 2013 at 9:12 pmI was temporarily detained as a "suspect" as well by NJ's finest. My slow time for the day would have been 10 minutes faster had I not been ordered to stop and answer questions as to why I was running in the forest. But the troopers seemed quite stern and not at all friendly, so I complied. One of the things they asked for was id [never really thought to carry that while orienteering]. And I never did see the female that the "concerned citizen", who called 911, witnessed being chased in the woods.

In retrospect, this looks very amusing and beats my whining about having to wait for a caravan of horses to leave a trail last week at Fair Hill. ‘Why are you running through the woods?’ … in a park… why not? It is also good to know that your guys didn’t look suspicious enough in orienteering gear to get carted away. I don’t think a trip to the police station would fit on Route Gadget very well.

Reply by bobburg on Tue May 21, 2013 at 10:41 pmSo much to report. So many people to thank.
By the time the police got to us at Registration, they were very cordial and apologetic. Just needed to complete their report. Imagine someone running in the woods!!!! My god! (Though to be fair, there IS a center for troubled kids right across the road from where we were.) Thank you Dave and Bradley for taking the initial "heat" with aplomb.
Dave -- Kathy thought you might have the police signing up for our next event by the end of your conversation with them. :-) And as Dan earlier mentioned, whatever DO you do in your spare time? 'fess up. And does Kathy know about this?????
I've recorded some strange Route Gadget routes, but if hauled off to jail, Bradley (and Len), this would have trumped anything previous.
So on to the rest of my thank you's.
Thank you to everyone who showed up in less than ideal weather far from their home. Above all, both event director and course setter hope that as many as possible attend the event and try their courses. Thank you so much for showing up and enjoying the day. (As we all know, 80% of success is showing up.)
Thank you to the police who soon realized that the 911 call was from a concerned, but totally mistaken, citizen.
Thanks to Zac and Dan who braved a flash downpour finishing control set up Saturday, (receiving a best event signage award from Mac) and especially to Dan who served as un-designated assistant Event Director for this event. Second there Sunday morning and next to last upon leaving. Thank you both so much.
Extra credit also goes to Kathy and Dave Urban. Kathy set up the e-system and then wo-manned it far longer than I ever intended. Thank you for soaking your car in the service of DVOA, and staying congenial throughout the day (and then finally enjoying getting out in the woods). And Dave, after setting up the last-minute controls in the morning, helped at Start, and then served as our test case with the local police.
And Pat and Bob Burton, who did everything they could all day, from helping set up the initial tarp to cover Registration from the constant drizzle, as well as lending and setting up their own canopy to keep Start dry, and in their spare time, welcomed everyone at Registration all day. Thanks for your NJ partnership.
Then of course, those who helped control pickup -- Petr, Tom , Dan and Zac. Thanks for finishing up the day collecting our drenched equipment (through drenched terrain) as we closed up shop.
Next up in New Jersey -- Come out to Washington Crossing June 16th. We absolutely promise a kinder day.

Reply by Len on Wed May 22, 2013 at 7:41 amBradley, your 10 minute loss was just what Patty needed to edge you out for 4th place.
So this brings a whole new level to unscrupulously removing better competition on the course your running and another reason to carry your cell phone.
Dave, Eric's spin on the situation was very funny. I love the image of enforcement. Just think, the NJ state police and motion sensor video at controls and we could be onto something.
