The Hickory Hop will get started in grand fashion, as we welcome all the world's orienteers to the 2013 DVOA Vice President's Cup.
The Point System and Courses
As in previous years, it will be a relay, inspired by the rules for the US Relay Championships. That means that there is a handicapping system, designed to enhance the overall level of competitiveness and excitement.
There are a few small deviations with respect to point values, indicated in bold, below.
Ages 17-20 or 40-49 receives 1 point
Ages 15, 16 or 50-59 receives 2 points
Under 15 years of age or 60 and older receives 3 points
A female orienteer receives 2 points, in addition to any age points.
A team can contain at most 1 person between ages 21 and 39 (inclusive).
Another deviation: there are 3 divisions: 3, 6, and 9 point teams. Each team must have 3 runners (and no one can run more than one leg.)
The total distance converged in the 3 divisions is as follows:
3 point: 12.9K
6 point: 10.4K
9 point: 7.9K
The different divisions will run the following legs:
3 Point
1) Blue
2) Green
3) Orange
6 Point
1) Red
2) Brown
3) Yellow
9 Point
1) Brown
2) Orange
3) Yellow
(The correspondence with color-coded courses is not exact. However, these courses would tend to correspond with longish middle courses of their respective difficulties.)
Event Logistics
Registration will open at 10:30 AM on Saturday at the Sand Spring Lake pavilion. (We’ll have orienteering signs to direct you there.) The total cost is $20 per team. Registration closes at 11:30 AM, allowing enough time to hand out maps.
There will be a mass start for all teams at high noon.
Unlike some relays, there will be no forking, catch-up mass starts, or other complications. This will be a barebones event (albeit one with great map, terrain, and we hope, good courses) that will be a perfect way to ease into the weekend's festivities.
The map is 1:10,000 with 5 meter contours. It features recent updates by Tom Overbaugh. Maps will be laser-printed on 8.5 x 11 paper, with clues on the maps and separate clues available. (Again, no forking.) The map may not have a legend, but some free legends will be available at registration.
Feel free to use this thread to advertise for teammates, and consult the Hickory Hop Rogaine pre-registration list to see other folks who will be there for the weekend.

Hi!
I'm a 25 Male and all my typcial O-Buddies are also in the 21-40 male range.
Therefore I'm in need of 2 teammates.
I typically run red couses with a middle of the pack finish time.
I'd classify myself as navigationally confident, just not the best runner as of yet.
I'm hoping to run a Red/Green/Blue or Brown leg but will be willing to do whatever works best for a potential team composition.
If anyone is interested let me know!
Thanks,
Nick
