Join DVOA this Memorial Day Weekend for a full weekend of orienteering at Hickory Run State Park!

Start the weekend with the annual Vice President’s Cup relay on Saturday, May 25. Fun for beginners and advanced orienteers alike, the mass start format will provide many photo and spectating opportunities. Run with your friends and family, or join one of many ad hoc teams on the day of the event. The race will be followed by the annual DVOA picnic. Plan to camp, bring your flashlights, and enjoy the night orienteering courses on Saturday evening. For the grand finale of the weekend, take on the challenge of the Hickory Run Mini Rogaine, either in the 3-hour or the 6-hour category.

For more information about the event, check back often at www.dvoa.org. See you at Hickory Run!

Also a great opportunity to once again to camp as a group like we did last summer at Frances Slocum.  The only difference we need to get our reservations in as early as possible since this is a holiday weekend and the park camping will fill up quickly.

This a great park for a lot of family fun beside orienteering, there is swimming, there is the boulder field to explore, some really great trails to just hike and enjoy more than we do when we orienteer.

    Who is interested???

A group tent site for up to 40 people is only $39/night

Anybody know which group site is the best?

They're all pretty much the same.  The lower letter ones are the ones towards the road and they go around a circular road with the higher letter ones towards the lake.  But they're all a good ways away from either.  They are on the Sand Spring Lake map, although the map was made before the group sites were moved to the area so they aren't mapped correctly.  It's by the gravel area just to the southeast of the lake.

If there is interest I'll book a group site for Saturday night.

In my experience, the campfires are nicer in the group sites

The "facilities" are just pit toilets and a hose for drinking water somewhere, so that might steer people toward the individual camping spots.

I'm leaning more toward the regular campsites rather than group. If I'm going to be running around in the woods all weekend I would like to be able to shower! So far it looks like there are plenty of sites left. Maybe we should pick an area of the campground so everyone can try to be nearby. It is required to book 2 nights to stay Saturday night, so looks like I would go up Friday & Saturday night. Other people who don't have to work Monday might prefer Saturday & Sunday instead though.

I'm with Julie, I would prefer to have some of the comforts of home if we are going to be in and out of the woods for the weekend.  We most likely will stay Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights as it is a holiday weekend and we don't have to work on Monday.  I aggree we should pick an area and try to stay close in that area of the regular campgrounds.

There is a small chance DVOA will be renting out one of group cabin sites (Daddy Allen where we have our annual September training weekend or Shehaqua, the one just up the road).  We should know if either is available some time in the next two weeks - if one is, we will rent it.  You might want to wait to make reservations until we know.

Have not decided completely on final details but probably something like registration/check-in starting at 8am, map distribution around 9am, briefing at 9:30, walk to start at 9:45, start at 10 for both the 3 hr and 6 hr.
