Batsto - Chase the Jersey Devil - FYI
-
Topic created by wilburdeb on Fri Dec 7, 2012 at 8:13 pmCome out and chase the Jersey Devil Sunday December 9.
There will be a few unmapped rootstocks and some downed branches in certain areas. Don't fret about the rain as there is lots of sandy soil allowing the ground to drain really quickly. The weather has been warm here in balmy south Jersey so the bugs may be active, be prepared.
Note: This event is sandwiched between shotgun and muzzleloader deer hunting season for region 23. We will be setting contols out Sunday morning and all controls must be out of the woods by sunset. Make sure you note the reduced event times (10:30 - 12:30). All runners must be out of the woods by 2:30 because our plan is to have the controls/flags out of the woods shortly thereafter.

Reply by BRycharski on Sun Dec 9, 2012 at 9:41 pmDan And Zak, Great Basto park, not many rootstocks on the O courses at all, and mostly they were small anyway. Very Fast terrain and eassy to overshoot the control marker, and excellant Courses. And Hey DVOA Blog - readers ....
Get ready for the Dan Barker, Bob R and Ann MacMullan productions films, "How DVOA gets people Outdoors having Orienteering Fun!". John, A Rutgers Camden Blogging college student, approached us at the registrations area and filmed us and a bunch of other DVOA - finishers on his communications with nature/"outdoors theme BLOG", details soon as I get them from John the student. He interviewed Dan Barker, and Dan extolled the merits of DVOA Map and compass running sports (with runners being photo-blogged in the background), Dan will definately will win an "Oscar" for his protrayal of the supreme and social Event Director, Ann and Angelica will vie for the best E punch & female actress category, and I, your humble E board typist, is seen calculating the math proof of the 3/4/5 right triangle rule; at the same time telling how to experience DVOA orienteering (cheaper than a movie ticket), and also have time to have forest fun and see beautiful plant scenes & forest raw nature; and be socialble; and see tame deer, jumping squirrels (they go nuts sometimes) and wild bears in the woods, but not become an animal meal (run fast, my friend
). More later.
John the rutgers local student, stated he will be editing his many interviews (have tripod can film) and will be posting something in the later part of the week as a class communications project. Hopefully he will share the web site and advertizing of the Great Basto forest O event with me. Til then ... Happy almost OChristmas! -

Reply by markwalsh on Sun Dec 9, 2012 at 11:10 pmThanks Barker's....Dan and Zach.... for a great season ending romp in the pinelands.
Shame the weather didn't really cooperate.
More rain coming in to the park then when actually running probably helped keep folks who lived in an hr radius to second guess coming.
I didn't run in to the Jersey Devil out there but I did run into this gentlemen who always winds up beating me to tough placements even if we aren't running the same course.
Today was my first time in the Pine Barrens ...everything looked the same .....tough for me to get used to minimal elevation and subtle terrain changes.
learned a few new skills today......the hard way.
See ya next yr and happy holidays! -

Despite the 2-hour (each-way) drive, and the dank weather, I'm glad I came! (and wish I could have stayed longer)
Brown was fun, with minimal blueberry bashing needed. I love that southern strip with pine needles and no undergrowth. By adding some adjoining areas, I bet it would make a great 1:4,000 ISSOM map and sprint venue.
Thanks Dan & Zac!
PS Godspeed to Uday, and thank you for inspiring the cake (even though you didn't get to eat any...) -

Thanks for a great day in the Pine Barrens. The course was good, the terrain was a challange, I was working so hard I forgot it was raining. So happy we were able to run on the Lake trail and Batona trail, which showcase the Batsto River. Nice day, thanks Pat and Bob
