AS most people know I have been greatly involved in the National Junior Team program for years and I finally stepped down last summer/fall as I needed a break from it all.  A lot of the things that I worked so hard to get going are finally doing so with the national program.  OUSA has hired a Junior Team coach, Erin Schrim to oversee everything and to get a number of exciting programs going for all juniors not just the elite juniors.  On of the things that I had wanted for so long and is finally coming to be is a development team program which will train the juniors for whatever they see as their future in orienteering.  So I have decided that I will be the organizer and group leader for the DVOA juniors but only if I get help from others that are interested in seeing that we retain our juniors for whatever their future holds for them in orienteering.  I have contacted a small core group of individuals in DVOA to help get this started but we need all the help we can get.  This will not be a big time commitment as long as we get a good number of people willing to get involved just a little.

One of the things that I'm looking to get going come our spring season is at two of our local events each month a short junior training/course review session starting shortly after the last start of the day goes out - 1PM or so.  This should last a hour to an hour and a half at most.  So the more people willing to do this once in a while the less we all will have to help.  There will some other things but at this time I'm not really sure what exactly the group will plan.

The DVOA Juniors are selling hot drinks, hot homemade soups and hot dogs at the Ridley Creek event next Sunday and we hope to do some preliminary planning around 1PM or so.  If you would like to get involved or have any ideas and will be at Ridley please stop by around 1PM and join the group.  If you will not be at Ridley but want to get involved or have any ideas please contact me directly.

We hope to have a good idea of what we want to do come 2013 spring season to be able to present something at the Winter meeting in January.

Let us all remember that our Juniors are the future of our sport and without them orienteering will not continue to be an up and coming sport in our country.  So it is important that all of us give just a little to make sure that when our grandchildren, great-grandchildren etc. are ready for orienteering that it will still be here for us to share with them.
