Junior News for 2013

Topic created by Orienteeringmom on Sat Nov 10, 2012 at 1:40 pmAs most of you know I resigned from the National Junior program early this summer and have been taking some time for me. My involvement with the national junior program came about because my children and my involvement with DVOA juniors. I'm giving serious consideration to coming back to getting the DVOA juniors back online and to work to get them more involved in our club and the sport of orienteering in general. I'm looking for a few interested people to work with me on this project. I hope to communicate with everyone by email and to work with our juniors at our orienteering meets starting in the spring. There are some very exciting new things happening at the national level and I don't want the DVOA juniors to miss out on the different things that are going to be available to them so we need to make sure that all of our juniors know what is available to them whether are serious about becoming elite level orienteers or if they just love to be out in the woods getting exercise and having fun. Below is an email that went out through the Clubnet and I'm posting it for all of you to see and to ponder if this is something your would like to do to give back to our sport of orienteering. Erin Schirm is the new PAID USA Junior Team Coach and he has some really exciting and wonderful plans for the USA junior progam. If after reading this, you are interested or would like to get more information on what I'm thinking about please feel free to contact me directly! Just remember that "The Juniors are the future of our sport and we need to do all we can to get them involved and to retain them as adults to keep Orienteering alive and well in the USA for years to come!"

We've prepared a summary of Erin Schirm's first month in his Junior
Development role<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1l5wCJnrZ70fKMTPArhRhhuUXotX-og6XJp_SpFxLUEE/edit>.
Note that the document includes the goals for his first year, straight
from his contract.
We'd like to identify a contact person from each club, with whom we can
communicate about junior development. We're also looking for coaches in
each area, to mentor juniors who join the development and standing teams.
We also ask clubs' help in identifying promising juniors of all ages who
would benefit from the additional attention and opportunities provided by
being on the development team. Finally, JTESC is seeking volunteers to
help with fundraising, planning next year's Europe trip for all interested
advanced juniors, communications and technology, recruiting, local
development, and team support. Please let me or Guy Olsen know if you are
interested. Please share this request with your club members.
Thanks!
Barb
