For those who don't know me, I was very active in the club when I was a teenager and really enjoyed event directing 2002-2004.  I am now back in the area enjoying running courses, and am an event director/course designer next month.

It turns out buying your first house (today), taking an actuarial exam (nov 6) and running an orienteering event (nov 25th) in the same month is not the best idea.

I posted up the volunteer list for the Mount Penn Antietam event, and definately could use as much help as possible.  I saw a few people already volunteered, great!  I have all of my courses designed, but I have not had as much time as I'd like field checking/streamers (I've mostly done white/yellow trail condition checks) and will be doing most of it November 10-11, and some on November 17-18.

I'd really appreciate any help from an experienced course setter: if anyone is local and would be willing to help out with field checking Nov 10-11 weekend, please contact me or sign up in the volunteer section.

As a side note- do we normally have start times earlier (or "end times") due to sunset being so soon late in the year?

I'll also need an e-punch expert, and some help with setting up controls in the morning.  Sign up in the volunteer section if you can help!  Thank you!

You have my sympathies.  I used to take actuarial exams - they are brutal.

Erik!  So good to hear you're back in the area.  I've wondered recently where you had gotten to, and always appreciated your taking on event directing and course setting years ago in your "youth."  So I am very happy to have you back -- DVOA will defintiely benefit from your participation.  (And what an adventure buying a home while cracking into a profession!)

If I am in town, I will definitely come out to help.  But alas, I live too far away (South Jersey) to help with fieldchecking, which to me is the essence of good course setting.  But I welcome your contacting me for any feedback -- I'd definitely be up for talking about what you're planning and looking over courses in CONDES.  If interested contact me at bobburg@verizon.net.

In answer to your last question, I don't remember starting earlier during EST.  But we definitely let people know that courses will close an hour earlier, and that those who enjoy spending maximum time out in the woods on their courses Laughingshould plan on starting earlier than normal.

    Welcome back, Erik.

The published start times still begin at 10, and the control pick up can start promptly at 4.. or before if everyone is accounted for...  If everything is ready before 10 your second shift workers could go out early.  Those that take more time to enjoy the woods should be there before 11 to start.

I will be taking my older son back to Albright that day, so my hope is to be in the general area.  We do not know our exact plans just yet, but I would like to help out in some fashion (maybe participation and pickup later in the day if he agrees to being dropped off before lunch).

    Thank you all...

Bob, once I get internet up in my house I'll load my courses in, and certaintly would appreciate another eye on my course designs.  My goal is to lower my DNF rate from last time lol (it was Daniel Boone...).

As for the control pickup, sunset is @ 4:40 so it seems starting at 4 is not enough time.  But I'd assume most people are complete earlier and some entire courses finish earlier, so I can have multiple waves of control pickup.  And with the e-punch tracking, I can see where some of the late runners have progressed in their course.

Rich, sign up on the event volunteer page if you can help out once you know your plans, Thanks!

I think if you announce well ahead of time that control pickup will begin at an earlier time than 4:00pm, that everyone would understand and either be done by that time or not be upset to find controls gone.  The key is to make sure it is clear to everyone that goes out when control pickup is scheduled to begin and to put it on the website with enough advanced warning so folks can take it into consideration when making their plans for the day.

Yes, all of us should start in time to be back by 3. The worst case scenerio is someone starting at 1PM and taking the entire 3 hour time limit. After daylight savings time goes away anyone taking 2 to 3 hours on their course should start before noon.  The event workers shouldn't need to be standing around in the dark at the end of the day.

Thanks Sandy/Ed.  I like the idea of setting the end time at 3PM.  If someone starts at 1, they'll have 2 hours to run. Plus we can track a late runner on e-punch system.  We lost an hour of daylight today, ah!

Sandy, do you have kit 5?

By the way, our normal epunch system is not set up for "tracking runners".  You need to have radio controls in order to track runners in real time.  If we are concerned about a missing runner, we can go get epunch units and bring them back and query them to see if someone has punched it, but we can't do it remotely.  We do monitor who is still out in the woods and how long they've been out, but we can't see how far they've gotten on their course.

Sandy- I'm not sure why I thought that we could track runners.  I was probably thinking of the function that lets you know how many runners are still out on each course.

Any updates on the courses for the Mt. Penn event?  Just curious as I noticed some other later events are already posted but not this one.  I hope all is going well and this event will still be ON.  I'm looking forward to being back up in MD next weekend and seeing you all at the event.  You have no idea how much I've really missed you guys!!  Innocent
