Frances Slocum Final Pre-event Info
-
Topic created by rgbortz on Tue Jul 31, 2012 at 11:44 amAs happens to every event director/course setter your event sneaks up on you and it's here before you know what hits you. Two months ago there was plenty of time, or so the thinking goes.
All arrangements are made. All courses are set. Is everybody ready to GO ?!!!!
The final count is 155 total controls.
66....FOOT-O 41....CANOE-O 24....BIKE-O 24....NIGHT-O
The distance and climb..........That's up to YOU !!
The Foot-O has unlimited options. My bulletin board at the event headquarters will list several. I will be available and willing to draw, or help draw, custom maps for individuals or groups that want to form for mini competitions. One good option is a score-O. I, or the group could collaborate, could pick and choose as many controls as decided on,draw a master, then everyone would compete for top score in a given time frame.
Remember, this is a two day event. You will have time to get together, decide, and do something like this on Sunday. Anyone interested in forming a competitive group should email me so I can post something at the event for signups.
Trail bikes are best for the Bike-O but hybrids would be okay, however there are a couple short spots you will probably want to carry your hybrid over. I would recommend before using a hybrid you talk to others who have done the course what they think since I am not a trail biker.
Canoe-O is a bit problematic in that the rental rates are a bit steep. I do need feedback asap on who has their own, who intends to do canoe-O, and which day you prefer. Those that already replied need not do so again. I want to reserve some canoes and kayaks so it's not a guessing game as to when you can rent one, but the economics aren't good to reserve full day rentals if people aren't using them throughout the day. We will have at least a couple canoes/kayaks owned by club members we are going to share for a fee to help reduce rentals for those that must rent. Send me an email of your intentions.
Canoe-O will have a beginner/white/yellow "method" and the advanced will have a different "method"; both are the same controls.
Night-O will have two levels of courses, same "method", but more controls (more difficult) for advanced.
Everyone that has been following F.S. posts and plans on attending, and hasn't already done so, please send me an email (alliron69@cs.com) of your intentions so I have somewhat of an idea what to expect and if I need to run to Office Max (for map copies) one more time.
Oh, and please try to get as many friends and family out to help make this event a blast.
One more request: do your best with the-powers-that-be and ask for good weather.
Any questions?...........see email above
Let's Get Out and Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

There will be NO water out in the woods. Everyone must carry their own supply. There are several fountains and restrooms throughout the day use areas. Restrooms are also in the campgrounds but please use them only if you are desparate for hydration (fountains outside) or other. There will be water at the Headquarters in store bought bottles for purchase for those without their own carry along.
Campsite #69 in Hemlock Hill is still reserved under my name for anyone needing a site either for Friday and Saturday nights OR just for one of those nights. However, if no one claims the site by 8:00p.m Thursday Aug. 2 I will need to cancel the reservation before forefitting the entire one night's fee. Call me at 610-334-3523 or send an email to alliron69@cs.com if interested. $23 per night. -

I plan to spend Friday at Hickory Run hanging ribbons for the Training weekend courses before coming on up to Slocum. If there is an underutilized campsite at Slocum with room for a two man mountain tent I'd like to share a site for Friday night. If not it is OK, I'll find a spot along the way rather than use a whole site for one small tent.

Reply by furlong47 on Tue Aug 7, 2012 at 10:07 amI only have one tent on my site, 77. So you can join if you want, fair trade for letting me borrow your boat. I probably won't be there until 8:30 - 9 PM Friday night to check in though.
By the way, the Perseid meteor shower is also Saturday night! -

Reply by rgbortz on Wed Aug 8, 2012 at 4:07 pmAll packed up and ready to go.
I will be leaving early a.m. tomorrow and will be staying through Monday.
Should any last minute questions or need of clarification come up call my cell....610-334-3523. It will be with me night and day at Slocum and it works in the park.
Looks like the rain should go away before noon on Saturday and Sunday looks like a winner !
With a little luck the rain will decide to go elsewhere.
Anthony will be staying to help me wrap up on Monday. Anybody looking for something to do Monday is more than welcome to stay and help. I will have space in my campsite if you are the camping kind.

Reply by CNYO-South on Sat Aug 11, 2012 at 10:30 pmRon,
Thanks for the Bike O. With Orienteering USA fielding a team to compete at the World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships in Veszprém, Hungary, it's nice to see clubs hosting more MTBO events.
I found the trails at Frances Slocum State Park to be more suited for trail bikes rather than hybrid bikes. The tree roots and loose stones made it a challenging ride.
