Pre-registration for Springton Manor
-
Topic created by FredR on Sun Jun 24, 2012 at 6:05 pmAs you may have seen, there is an optional pre-registration for this event. Because of the differences in the way the event has been promoted and designed, I'd like to cut down on the uncertainty and associated waste in defensive map printing. The number of new comers is of particular interest, but I encourage everyone to take a minute and sign up (and save a dollar).The link that went up today on the site homepage, however, is the wrong one. Please give it a day or two to get fixed and we'll be in business.ThanksFred

Reply by WindWalker on Wed Jun 27, 2012 at 8:18 pmWas looking at the info, has the cost of Orienteering gone up? Or is the increase for this event only?
Thanks, Mike -
Reply by FredR on Wed Jun 27, 2012 at 9:04 pmThese are special prices for just this event. The difference is nominally for the printing of extra training maps, but there's also a rental fee for the carriage house and the reduced junior fees to take into account.If you pre-register by the 16th, the adult club price is the usual $6.

Reply by WindWalker on Wed Jun 27, 2012 at 9:12 pmThanks Fred for the clarification. Was just curious. This is still THE cheapest sport I have ever done by all means, as far as required gear and cost to participate.
Thanks,

Reply by anniemac on Sun Jul 1, 2012 at 8:46 amI would love to pre-register for Springton, but since I'm on the cusp of moving from yellow to orange I would like to know the distances for each course before deciding, and perhaps any thoughts on the difficulty of either course for a (somewhat) beginner like me. I'm pretty sure it's time for me to move to orange, but I guess a few encouraging details might be helpful. Please reply only when convenient - I realize I'm a bit early in requesting this info. And if this info is not available until the day-of, no worries. You know I'll either need a yellow or orange map.
Thanks!

Reply by FredR on Sun Jul 1, 2012 at 11:13 amHi Ann - I'm glad you asked, because yours is essentially the situation I had in mind for this event.I'm working on the courses now and should at least have distances posted before the pre-registration deadline.In general, the competitive courses will be toward the shorter and easier (navigationally) end of the scale of our typical local events for several reasons:
- The map/venue just isn't as challenging as others;
- The likely hot weather in late July; and
- To encourage people to move up.
So, Ann, the general idea is that you would arrive and go to the "training area" where you could talk with people about the new challenges of moving to Orange, then go out alone or shadowed on the "Intermediate" level training course to get a feel for that level of course. Afterward, you might further discuss any problems you had. You could even go out another time on the training course if you wanted. The training courses will be untimed and the maps recycled, so there's no limit on the training you can do.When you're ready, you would go to the "competition area" where you would pick up your Orange map and run the course as usual for local events (i.e., self-start, epunch timing, keep your map, etc.). Of course, you're welcome as always to hang out afterward and talk with people about how you did. -

Thanks very much for your reply. It sounds as if Orange is the way to go! I'm looking forward to the learning opportunities you've thoughtfully included in this event, and the chance to pester someone other than my father about orienteering.
Ann
