We want to thank everyone who came out to WCC on what started as a very wet day. Though no new rain fell while folks were out on courses, and the cool weather was a pleasant change from the summer heat, vegetation was quite wet and thick, and footing in many places was slippery to treacherous.

    FIRST
: LOST AND FOUND:  Some money (cash) was found in the parking lot, perhaps lost by someone en route to pay the park fee.  If you are missing some cash, please let us know the approximate amount. We would like to restore it to its rightful owner.
A compass and a whistle were found by orienteers on two courses. We will bring these to Hibernia. If you think one of these might be yours, do let us know.

SECOND: LOST and NOT FOUND: Fred lost his keys last weekend, south of Wedgewood Road: one Subaru key, one electronic door opener, and one house key.  We offer a reward to anyone who finds them.

THIRD: Well deserved thank yous are due to Mary Frank who arrived before 7:30 AM to drop off essential popup shelters, erecting one just where we needed it; to Steve Mones who manned registration for the entire event; to Kathy Urban and Ed Niemann for taking care of e-punch; to Dave Urban and Tom Overbaugh and  a few others who manned the remote start; to Ralph Tolbert who did control and signage pick-up; and to quite a few other helpful folks who lent hands at various essential tasks before and during the event whenever, there was a need! We couldn't have done it without you! THANKS SO MUCH!

Perhaps we're all looking forward to some crisp clear weather as the "greens" turn to yellows and reds, and visibility improves as leaves drop… even if we do end up picking burrs from our O-gear!

    Have a GREAT orienteering Fall!

Count me among those that enjoyed the Brown course at White Clay.  Yes it was thick and green in spots.. and of course it was wet, and in some spots a bit slippery; but this course really put a premium on route choice.  In open woods a poor route may cost 30 seconds on a control. Sunday a similar mistake could cost 10 minutes.  I'm sure I had at least 20 minutes of error time divided between numbers 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9.

Hi Fred, Bev and all of your stalwart volunteers! Thanks for going the extra mile to make this event happen. I know it was a tough weekend with an 'away' meet going on at the same time . . . way to get it done! I had a nice time in the woods, scrambling through some surprisingly different vegetation from the Spring event on the same map. The long legs on red presented some good route choice options, and the 'clusters' used the available clean woods to good effect. It took me hours to get rid of the nice chill I built up . . . I must have not been pushing myself hard enough. ;) Thanks again, Hugh4

I also enjoyed the red, even though my route choices seemed less than optimal most of the time. I thought it was a tough course, plenty of climb and fight vegetation. I liked the long legs with the clusters of controls. It was slippy at times and I was wishing I had some spiked O shoes. And my knees are wishing I had some O pants.

I really only had one screw up and that was on 1-2. I've been playing with trying to navigate more effectively on the move. So I've been trying to do less precise compass and more rough compass and contour navigation. I am getting better at reading the fine contour details and using them to run by, but the thick vegetation was messing with me on this leg. I veared way left and ended up out at the main road, a nice long run down the road, through some back yards, over a fence or two and down to the cul-de-sac and I was ready to attack. No doubt the very long way around, at least the yards were nice to run through. I kept wondering if anyone saw me and was wondering what the heck is this guy doing??? At one point I noticed a sign that said "Welcome to Pennsylvania", turned out that I ran in three states on Sunday.

Like Hugh, I was toasty warm and wet while running, but instantly caught a chill when I stopped and was still wearing my hoodie around the house when we got home.

Thanks to all involved for putting these events on, it's great fun, even though it is somewhat painful.

    Mike
