I was at the AGM as was Tim Walsh. As Clare started to read about this year's winner you immediatlely popped into my mind and I turned to Tim and whispered Eric Weyman and Tim replied "that's what I'm thinking". When she read that the winner had represented the US at 6 WOC's and that he was involved in this year's Team trials courses I knew that it was you, Eric as did Tim, so that when Clare said this year's winner is Eric Weyman we were both more than ready to applaude as was everyone there but it was neat to know who Clare was going to announce just before she announced it. I wish everyone for the club could have been there as it was exciting but I'm truly glad that I was there.
Eric you so deserved this award and many people that were there Thursday night also said as much to me and Tim.
I'm proud to have you as a member of our Club and a friend.
Again congratulations!
Janet

Check the link on the home page at http://www.dvoa.org/pdf/DVOA%20Nomination%20for%20the%202011%20Silva%20Award.pdf to see a quick overview of his long history of working to increase the quality of the Orienteering experience in North America.

As mentor and friend, you have been an invaluable consultant and teacher since the first time I attended a course setting training at the Winter Meeting in 2001. I have been hooked every since, and am never surprised hearing your advice in my head whenever I am course setting, mapping, or simply running a local event.
Your expertise, which you share so generously locally, nationally, and internationally, has inspired so many of us to hold our own efforts to the highest standards and to keep refining our skills. And that gets reflected in the quality of mapping, course design, and events throughout the country.
I am delighted that you have at last received this recognition.
And most of all I thank you for your friendship and counsel. -

Reply by Steve on Sun Aug 7, 2011 at 10:14 pmA recent thread asked people "What makes DVOA so good?" The stock answer was the people. Eric exemplifies this ideal. By keeping his standards above the norm, and by pushing those around him to perform better, Eric has helped to make orienteering the high quality, technically accurate exersize that we enjoy. Can you imagine if even one out of four flags were misplaced or if the attack points were all two or three degrees off? It has been Eric that has made a point to keep our maps at the level we expect, and it has been Eric that has pushed so many others in the club to maintain a high level of competence.
Thank you Eric, for pushing us all to do our best. It is about time that you are recognized.

Well, apparently I owe thanks to many people, and I don’t really know the extent or the specifics of the people involved, but I sense that a great number of DVOA people were involved in this nomination. I was not aware of the conspiracy, but I sense this was a large sustained effort, perhaps over a long time.
My main insight into the effort was the orchestration of the news-breaking phone call, placed to our semi-regular TNT-Media gathering, by our DVOA President Vadim Masalkov, last Thursday night. Everyone else in the room seemed to know what the phone call was about, and before Vadim and I ended out conversation, an additional bottle was already opened and poured for all.
I am very honored and humbled by the breadth and depth of the apparent effort, as well as the response to the eventual news, as evidenced by this thread and other communiqués.
I took a look at the nominating petition, scanned a couple paragraphs, then saw the length, and decided to save it for later. It was obvious that a whole lot of thought and work went into this. I intend to read it eventually.
I did note a section mentioning Pat Dunlavey, and I am grateful for this. Pat was certainly very important in getting me started along this path early on. It was extremely valuable to have the reinforcement of someone who shared the conviction that orienteering maps and courses were worth taking seriously. I have long believed that he deserved this award, or some equivalent recognition, a long time ago, and I sure wouldn’t mind if this was communicated up the ladder.
So, thank you to the conspirators, and thank you to the people posting tributes here. Perhaps most of all, thank you to people who have continued the effort to produce example-setting maps and courses. One of the greatest rewards for me is to see a well done map or set of courses with which I had little or nothing to do. Nate (and Sam’s?) “text book” courses at FCE, are a recent example of this.
