FCE July 24th

Topic created by edscott on Sun Jul 24, 2011 at 7:44 pmI know it was hot, but a lot of you that stayed in the AC missed a great set of courses. Short enough for the weather.. avoiding the worst of the green, and the more out dated parts of the map... no excessive climbing... used distinct features that stood out in the terrain under summer foliage. Well done Nate!!!!!!

Reply by WindWalker on Sun Jul 24, 2011 at 8:18 pmHot it was, but there was plenty of water out on the course, you just had to make sure you took alittle extra time to drink enough.
I thought it was an interesting course. I liked it, I guess I just enjoy boulder hopping. I just wish the map was 1:10,000 so I could see all the detail. Most times my mistakes where from not seeing the detail, and my magnifying glass got coated with sweat and was about useless.
I think Nate did a great job, I couldn't tell it was his first go at course setting. Job well done.
Thanks, Mike -
Reply by Sandy on Sun Jul 24, 2011 at 8:49 pmAgreed. Excellent Red course keeping out of the nasty green and the worst of the boulders. Really fun course with several legs where you could (well, someone with working knees could) cruise along the bottom of a steep hill or the top of a drop-off waiting for your attackpoint to show up and then nail the control.
Didn't mind the heat so much as the bugs! I don't remember the midges ever being so bad. -
Reply by Vadim on Mon Jul 25, 2011 at 0:30 amWhat a wonderful set of courses! In the summer, at French Creek, and still runnable, no excessive climb, not much of boulder fields crossing, a bit of green here and there, plenty of water at the right places. I wish it was a bit cooler :) But that's the thing we cannot control. I'm really glad to see another junior jumping on CS. Well done Nathan, way to go Sam. Thanks to all volunteers and consultants and assistants for making event happened.

Reply by KathleenG on Wed Jul 27, 2011 at 8:39 amThe course was good; I usually have a tough time at French Creek but this course avoided many of the truely nasty bits!
The heat and spiders and flies were my tourments, but the course designer had no control over those! Yay - I finished, wasn't last, and wasn't bleeding - much. A good day for me.
Yes, the map scale was tough - I need even stronger reading glasses to deal with 1:15000 maps. When we upgrade, 1:10000 please! -
Reply by edscott on Wed Jul 27, 2011 at 9:39 amThe upgrade will be at 1:10000, but of course can't cover the entire area.. image handling a map 1/3 larger. A version that includes the key areas... nearly everything that was used last weekend and a large part of FCC.. should be available for 2012. Hopefully the rest can be upgraded over the next couple years.
